The Daily Grind: Have you ever had an MMORPG-related dream?

A real dream, not just a dream to top the raid leaderboard.

MOP reader CamelotCrusade submitted today’s whimsical Daily Grind topic. “The other night I had a dream where I was fleeing a tidal wave and I was riding away from it on a horse to escape it,” he wrote to us. “After watching a cinematic in my mind of the wave bearing down on me, I realized I was actually on an MMO-style horse, and I was in virtual reality. I was still anxious in the way you are when you’re trying to save your character, but I didn’t have much time to dwell on it because of what happened next. I rode my mount furiously towards a nearby town, shelter in view, aiming for a fortified looking inn. Almost there! But then – oh no! – I was forcibly dismounted, nearly tripped, and had to run, panting, for cover, as the air got wet and misty. There’s more that happened after that, but what really stuck with me? I woke up thinking: That’s a stupid rule! Damn near got me killed! Why can’t you ride your mount in town!?”

I am positive I’ve had MMO dreams in the past, but I can’t recall anything specifically. How about you – have you ever had an MMORPG-related dream?

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!

Back in the days, Vanilla WoW, when I was heavily addicted to it, after a full night of Scarlet Monastery, I was running to it again with my friends in my dream. Real friends. Real wood. Real grass. It was weird that I translated the virtual world into a real one.

Oh yes. Plenty of times, in fact. The only issue I have is, when I dream of being an Orc warrior, I can never figure out if I’m a Warcraft, Elder Scrolls Online, or a Warhammer orc. Or when I’m a warrior, period.

Not that I’m complaining though. I still have one hell of a power fantasy dream to rival the cheesiest of isekai anime.

LOL you ran my dream! 😀🌙🛏️

Here’s how it ended: After I got force dismounted, I ran to the inn and rushed into the taproom. I was frantically assessing the building’s sturdiness and then I realized: the front door, now closed behind me, was a massive metal structure. Plus they had sealed the gaps with straw (?).

The rest of it appeared to be ordinary timber though, so I was worried. The wave was coming! I approached the bartender to ask him about it, but he was busy, so I turned around again….

Only now, outside the window was a decimated landscape, soaked and muddy, with dripping leafless trees and overturned wagons and barrels everywhere (and a few players face down in the muck). I blinked, wondering how I’d missed the wave, and I saw the straw around the door was also waterlogged, and… then I woke up, like I said above, especially annoyed about the no-mounts-in-town rule. I could have been killed!

They say you remember your dreams a lot better if you tell someone about it right after you had it, so with coffee in hand I headed to the submission form on MOP. As I see from the comments below, most of you are saying you either don’t dream or don’t remember it… to that I say “me too!” I can count on one hand dreams I remembered this well (there was that one where my grandmother was actually a high seas pirate…). 😎

Yeah I’ve had MMO dreams. Typically I’d have dreams of WoW back when I’d hardcore binge on it during summer times between highschool, like back when I was making a hard push to level 60 in June-July 2006 and sort of nolifed for a week or so. Also have had some LoL-related dreams and probably some MUD-related ones when I was heavily into an RP MUD. In general when I play stuff too much I can usually get a dream or two about that stuff.

Generally, I don’t have dreams. Or, as a friend pointed out, maybe I have them but don’t’ remember them. *shrug*

But from time to time something sticks with me when I wake up. A few years ago, I was playing MMOs a great deal more than I do now. And on one occasion, apparently, my dungeon crawling didn’t end when I closed my eyes for some much-needed sleep.

I had been playing UO for hours and just finally just crashed into my bed fully clothed and fast asleep. Oh yes, I dreamt I was of Ultima Online. No, not playing the game but in the game. I was living in that world. Lol.

In the dream, I was determined to explore a cavern called Underworld (another Ultima game if you will remember). But nobody cared to go with me. So I grabbed my torch and went in.

After walking a few feet into the darkness, the cavern turned into a series of never-ending hallways. And so, I followed the twist and turns at a brisk pace. And on and on I went. And on and on… it never ended.

When I woke the next morning, I remembered those hallways clearly and nothing else.

Heh. Not sure what it means. But I have had friends explain it to me with all sorts of interpretations. Lol!

I’ve had plenty of MMO dreams, but none were interesting enough to describe. At least they’re better than the dream where I’m back in school but have no idea what class I’m supposed to be in and didn’t have the assignments done anyway. I hate that dream.

Oh yeah, that one. Mine is a college dream where I realize I didn’t do my reading and wait, have I ever gone to that class except for the first one? Then I start to panic realizing I’ve skipped practically the whole thing and have a ton of catching up to do before the exam. And where is my book? What else have I been lax on?!

It takes a few minutes after I wake up to realize the whole thing is invalid because I graduated years ago. Then, sweet relief.

In my real life, I was sent tickets to my university graduation a year early because of a campus computer error. I was all ready to graduate with my friends, but I couldn’t escape the feeling that something wasn’t right.

I went and spoke to a campus contact, who informed me that no, I could not graduate after all, because I still owed one elective course to complete my degree.

I had been very hardcore about my studies in university, and had basically taken as much of the requisite difficult coursework first (to get them out of the way, and off my back), mostly ignoring electives.

So, I couldn’t graduate with my friends, and I had to come back to take one film course in order to graduate!

As such, I still have a recurring nightmare that my degree remains incomplete, as a new computer error has been discovered, and I’m told that I must re-enroll in university if I want my degree to remain valid!

Years later, and I still have that frickin’ nightmare!

Cheers,

OMG. It never happened to me in real life but I’ve had that exact dream.

Uh-oh. Maybe we’re like two halves of the same personality, existing at the same time — like that famous movie I probably shouldn’t spoiler here?

You get to be the cool, renegade half, because I just couldn’t handle the pressure. :-)

Cheers, pal,

Sometimes after visiting a new themed map or one with a considerable amount of new assets, I expand that map a thousend-fold in my dreams! And with non-scripted A.I. everywhere, of course! XD

My pigtails have seen things you people wouldn’t believe. Attack ships on fire off the shores of Teldrassil. I watched sea-beams glitter in the dark near the Isle of Quel’Danas. All those moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain. Time to game… <3

PS: More seriously though…I had a lot of weird dreams about the Elvin starting zones. And endgame content I am pretty sure any developer would touch due to its dark and disturbing nature of its content. :(

I’ve had very stressful dreams where I’m the healer in an MMO (usually Aion or WoW) and I can see everyones HP go down but I can’t cast any spells. Maybe it’s my anxiety or the less-than-friendly LFD puggers that I’ve met, but I always wake up feeling stressed as fuck.
