Red Dead Redemption 2 has officially launched, and now the wait for multiplayer begins

23

You might not remember it now that you’re probably boot-deep in cow poop and cowboy blood, but Red Dead Redemption 2 suffered multiple setbacks as well as large delays along its path to release. A year ago, Rockstar was busy obliviously defending lockboxes. In recent weeks, it’s been plagued by accusations of abusive work conditions after studio reps obliviously bragged about 100-hour work weeks and then obliviously compared the overworked employees to magical elves. (Some people need to be forbidden to give interviews for their own good. Just stop talking, dudes.)

So you’d think today’s launch would be fraught with caveats. But you’d be wrong! The mainstream media is busy treating the arrival of RDR2 as a “cultural [event] akin to a new Star Wars film,” the “most realistic video game ever made” with “the most believable open world yet.” Gamasutra is hailing it as a “masterpiece.” One site basically said you’re not a real gamer if you aren’t into it. Even The Onion has a bit.

Of course, the reason Massively OP is following the game isn’t so much for the single-player console launch but rather for the promise of the multiplayer version, Red Dead Online, which is due to hit testing next month, plus the PC version, which is still just a rumor, but a likely one.

Here’s a run-down of our coverage since the original announcement!

Don’t forget to eat, sleep, and bathe! Out of game, that is. In-game, that’s up to you.

No playable female character…

Yes, gender locked just like the The Witcher, Zelda, Tomb Raider, Last of Us 1 and 2 or Mario Odyssey etc, due to the nature of the story – which is a positive. There will be gender choice in the multiplayer mode.

Sadly I am not interested in Multiplayer :p Also I didnt say I support the other games for gender locked characters. In my opinion, when there is a third person game which have a story and character development, shouldn’t be gender locked.

I’ve spent my life debating and arguing about gender locks (and the different female character treatment) in multiplayer games – but I have to say when it comes to a deeper single player story experience that is about a specific person I am fine with them. This is one person’s story and he happens to be male. To complain about such would be like Tomb Raider players complaining they can’t be a guy (which I do know some do but I don’t find justification in the complaint).

It’s a completely different thing with online games where it’s your representation and a character you’re building the story of, but in a single player game where you’re following someone else’s story I’ve never had an issue with gender locking.

And sure, you *can* do something such as make a story that fits a character of either gender like with Mass Effect that’s about a generic Shepard that can be anybody. But that isn’t for every story. This story is specifically about Arthur Morgan. Should we take away the story teller’s ability to set gender in characters when we’re playing someone else’s story? This isn’t about us, this is about Arthur and being in his shoes and experiencing his story.

If there was a game made about my life, you’d need to have to play it as me. The main character would be female. Playing my story as a male would change the entire story and it wouldn’t be my story anymore.

Arthur is a very specific person. You can’t customize his face, height, etc, because he is a specific person and plastic surgery doesn’t exist in his time – he’s stuck with the face he was born with. You can only customize that which Arthur would normally be able to change in his life – his beard, clothes, hair length, clothes etc.

If you don’t want to experience Arthur’s story than you shouldn’t be playing the game because that’s what this is about. It’s not about any old person you can insert there but it’s about him. He doesn’t have a fluid gender, he is a man.

Once we get into online play with other people, that becomes a different issue. Female players will be able to be created there as you’ll be experiencing your own story and that will be your representation to others and so you will be able to create what you want to at that point.

But lara croft is already a “famous” character with lot of years of games and movies.. who is the red redemption male protagonist? Just a random dude created for that specific game…

Look i am not complaining here, i just left a notice. I am not gonna write on their forums or anything.. i ll just not play it cause i will not be able to immerse myself with the character i am playing…

I always play for immersion and story, thats why i play rpg 80% of time and some turn based strategies (which i can imagine being the leader/commander of my empire).

Picking up my PS4 pre-order in a few minutes at GameFlop. They are doing a night pickup event here for launch. No stupid digital “wait til later” launch for me!

Old school hardcopy FTW!

love how you keep putting out these news articles that it launches at 7am today, and that its launched now.

but in reality it isnt launched in NA yet, at least for ps4 users who purchased via psn… some peoples copies came early, but for those of us who ordered digitally we have to wait till the actual launch at midnight on the east coast

i normally pride myself on sharing your articles with friends bc your normally accurate with what you say, but this has been kind of a let down

You do realise that the US isn’t the world right? It came out for a lot of countries before your comment, do your research.

Yes I do realize that.. but also take into account her wording never mentioned region, just that it launched at said time.

I bought a PS4 because of this game and for Spiderman. I’ve been a mostly PC gamer for the past 10 years with only a few matches of Street Fighter or MK on my sons console, but this game looks very sweet and I had wanted to play the first one way back when, but did not have a console. I’m a gamer. I do like my PC, but this game looks too good to wait around for PC hopes. A year is too long to wait. The PS4 will get use and with Black Friday coming up, it’s a good time to pick one up and PS+ as well.

and now that you own a PS4, get Horizon Zero Dawn and The Last of Us! Furthermore, if you like a good story, Detroit Become Human is also awesome!

As a PSA for any North American PC gamers who might be feeling a bit too impatient to wait months (possibly even over a year based on GTA5) for a PC port, Microsoft is offering a $100 USD ($130 CAD) discount on orders of any in stock Xbox One (S or X) for consoles purchased with RDR2; this includes the various Forza, NBA 2K19, PUBG, and Shadow of the Tomb Raider bundles, plus the not-yet-released-but-will-be-next-Friday Fortnite Xbox One S bundle, but excludes the upcoming Battlefield and Fallout 76 bundles. This is for both online and in store purchases. US retailers Best Buy, Walmart and Game Stop are also participating; I’m not yet sure about Canadian retailers other than Microsoft stores. Not a Microsoft employee: I’ve been browsing a lot in the last couple weeks to reacquire a Xbox now that they appear to be diving into Mouse and Keyboard support in a big way, so I’ve just been doing my research.

This offer might also become available in other parts of the world: the US website had it up about 2 hours before the Canadian site, so it’s possible they’re announcing at different times around the world.

I’m still pissed about the Super Lame, Zero Imagination title this 3rd game got.

Red Dead Revolver
Red Dead Redemption

Red Dead Revenge seemed like the logical Third Step for me and all my Gaming Friends.
Simply adding a “II” to the second games title is beyond lazy, lmao.

How many console peasants, er players here are going to buy/play this? If the first month or two pans out well, I will be hoping extra hard for a GPCMR version. :P

MP is not the Core Element of RDR2, it is “a nice to have” imho, there is plenty to do on the Solo Gameplay, also i dont think that MP will all be that Hype you think it is.

@Dug from Earth, just connect a Mouse and a Keyboard to your PS4, you will be surprised.

With over 60 hours of story content, not including all the open world action adventure goodness, we’ve got plenty to do until multiplayer comes
