Slash and dismember your way through possessed villagers in The Black Masses

If hacking and slashing your way across an island filled with throngs of possessed inhabitants sounds like a good time to you, then you might be interested in Brilliant Game Studios’s upcoming co-op RPG The Black Masses. Although the game is somewhat unfortunately named — though it presumably refers to the fictional Satanic ritual, we hope — it seems to make good use of the technology pioneered by the studio’s first title, the slightly absurdist sandbox Ultimate Epic Battle Simulator, which The Black Masses utilizes to render “hundreds of thousands” of enemies across the game’s “16 square kilometer island.”

The game’s story seems fairly straightforward: Players are stranded on the aforementioned island, which has been “corrupted by a strange antediluvian substance,” and they’ll have to use “powerful abilities and immersive first person combat” to fend off the crazed villagers and “attempt to cleanse the land from its demoniac possession, if such a task remains possible.” Right now, there’s no set release date for The Black Masses, though the game’s Steam page says that players should expect it to enter Early Access this spring. In the meantime, though, you can check out the official reveal trailer and gameplay teaser just below.

Looks like an open world game inspired a bit by vermintide.

I hope it has not just a story, but also co-op.

We dont need yet another shallow survival game thats only difference is being able to hack through 30 zombies at once.

*Pigtails hopes one day that jurisdictions around the world will outlaw any video game that has weapons and/or implements that float distractingly in front or to the side of the visual field of one’s monitor while playing it*

…with that out of the way, yeah it looks like another dismal zombie game. /bleh

“Isn’t that being a bit melodramatic, Uta?”

Err…more of a major irritant for me that compels me to rant about it. Sorry. :(

The funny thing is that when you can switch from 1st person into 3rd, the entire character on screen usually is far less annoying and takes up less space than the arms and weapons when in 1st person.

You should see how bad it is in Fallout 76 with some of the large weapons there. They take up soooo much of the screen, and yet I’m forced to use that view because of the bugs that still exist with multiple parts of 3rd person view (including aiming that’s way off when stuff gets close, and bugged weapons that won’t let you use them at all in 3rd person view).

Something in my brain just doesn’t like 1st person view anyway even without the annoyances. I actually get a bit dizzy playing in first person and sick if I play for a longer amount of time in it, but if I switch to 3rd and see my character there I don’t get dizzy anymore. It probably has something to do with the way they make the screen move in 1st person.

Yay.. another asset flip and rehash on the Epic Battle Simulator engine. If you think Ark Evolved is egregious, they aren’t even on the same level as the 5 guys working as Brilliant Game Studios. Do your homework before purchasing but it’s best to just steer clear of Black Masses.

I thought zombie-mania was over…
I guess, you don’t have to deal with A.I. and its prerequisite non-artificial one that much! ;P

At least it is Evil Magic this time instead of another Toxic / Plague title.
