Grapeshot Games is working to combat Atlas hackers

It’s been a bit of a rough start for Grapeshot Games’s open-world survival MMO Atlas since it launched late last month, and it’s clear that there are still plenty of kinks that need to be ironed out. Case in point, Reddit user takukuku recently stopped by the game’s subreddit to post a clip that shows a player using some kind of hack or exploit to fly around the map destroying instantly destroying structures — definitely not the kind of thing anyone wants to see in a game where even fairly basic buildings can require hours or days of effort to construct.

For what it’s worth, however, the streamer who witnessed the event in question did manage to catch a glimpse of the hacker’s player ID, which has allowed the devs to ban the offending player. Live Producer and Community Lead Jatheish replied to the Reddit post, saying, “we’ll be removing [the player] from our Official Network,” and he later took to Twitter to announce that the devs are in the process of removing hackers and investigating the vulnerabilities that allowed the hacks in the first place.

This. This is why I haven’t purchased this game. Not because of a “rushed” development schedule. Not because of day one launch issue memes. Not even because of the 3am riding. It’s all about the hacks and exploits.

Survival games attract the most amount of hacker/exploiters I’ve ever seen in 20+ years of PvP environments. People know it takes days and months of cumulative effort and the schadenfreude of hacking to destroy it all is simply unbeatable. From DDOSing a server to crash it so people can’t even log in to defend and then flooding the server with your own people to the straight up kinda things you see in the reddit video. There’s a thing in ARK called “meshing” that’s so widely known there’s just straight up youtube guides out there on how to do it (and guess what you can do in Atlas). It’s not even a question if “if” this will happen, it’s just a matter of when.

And there’s zero compensation for these kinds of unnatural disasters. There’s no server rollbacks. There’s no pile of resources, buildings given, or tames restored. Just a “we banned the player, looking into it” message that you get over and over and over and over again. Such a huge waste of time.

Can’t the just do whatever they did to combat the same problem in Ark ? After all it’s essentially just DLC.

Sure. What they did to combat the problem in ARK is give up and decide to make a new game.

Hackers are still undermeshing, aimbotting and lootstealing Titans in ARK.

I wonder if the hacks are coming from one of those Asian countries where you can go to jail for hacking games?

China, and they all but endorse this behavior. For twenty years now they’ve participated in fraud and money laundering and it’s a multi-million dollar business.

Now an American who makes a business out of this would get a cease-and-desist, but in China you can make a meager living by selling virtual goods.

The Chinese government has very little incentive to change this. We’re currently in a trade war, and China is posturing for a new position on the world stage.

I’m still not calling them Grapeshot.

In 3 years after milking the code dry they will make a game about wizards and dragons and called themselves The Wand Factory. Dick euphemisms for the office snicker bonus shot.

Isn’t that game made already & called “Dark & Light” ?

An unfinished game has hackers? My word! The very thought!

Beyond the hacks and exploits, things just aren’t balanced. The resources needed to destroy a ship are a tiny fraction of the resource cost of the ship. Unless you are part of a mega zerg, you won’t have 24/7 coverage, so you better enjoy rebuilding your ship every night when it gets offline raided.
