One Shots: 100% pure nightmare fuel

Oh hey! Nice to see you there! Do you think that you can stop screaming quite so loud? Yes, I know that our header today will cause many sleepless nights and cause great anxiety the next time you step in an MMO. But there’s a very important and beneficial reason for me to shove this in your face. It amuses me.

And if you happen to find yourself in Black Desert any time soon and see glitchy nightmare fuel like this, maybe you can do something about it. “The reason PvP exists is to destroy monstrosities like this,” Vunak told us. See? It’s not just to give lazy MMO devs an easy way to create “content” for us!

Anyway, let’s see if we can take you screams down a notch from “bloodcurdling” to “whimpering” by the end of this column.

I asked our readers last week to share some of the MMO pictures that made us laugh, especially when the carefully staged scene didn’t turn out as well as expected. Here’s a great example from one Final Fantasy XIV player who found that minipets have a mind of their own.

“Unfortunately I do not have any screenshots with cat minions (even though I have them), but I do have a few others,” said Random MMO Fan. “Here’s a unicolt trying to photobomb our group.”

Anyone who knows me knows that I am not a great fan of cats. You should go to Eliot for such things. I see cats as small tigers who live in your house, not as a willing pet but as a predator biding its time until you let your guard down and expose your jugular.

Or, you know, you try to take a pic.

“Cats are so persistent in BDO,” said Black Desert. “Always photobombing a good screenshot!”

There’s been a murder! Madame Jacobson is dead, and we’re rounding up all of the likely suspects. The problem is that there are too many people with motives against her, especially after she brought down the orphan circus and made a coat of their puppies.

At least we know that Hurbster didn’t do it in Elder Scrolls Online, because he told us so. That’s good enough for me.

Missing Christmas already? Here’s a weird last gasp of the season, brought to you by Angry Female Superman Claus in DC Universe Online.

“This shot reminds me of Mr. Furious’s Boundless Rage,” said Hikari.

Is your life lacking a purpose until you have a new screenshot challenge? Well then, here you go: Show off a location or structure in an MMO that you would love to be your own personal housing if you had that option! Where would your character live?

Every week, One Shots shines a spotlight on the best community screenshots from your MMO adventures. If you have a great pic to share, email it to justin@massivelyop.com with the subject “One Shots.” Make sure that the picture is over 880px wide and comes with a description or story!

What housing would I choose for myself from an MMORPG? Probably my captain’s quarters from Star Trek Online.

To fall asleep beneath a sky full of stars? I could get used to that, I think. :-)

As a runner-up choice, there’s always my gunslinger’s hideout under the seas of Manaan in Star Wars: The Old Republic..

One of the tricks to being a successful smuggler in the Star Wars universe? Always hide where the Empire would never think to look!

Oh, how I wish I could get the entire apartment into a shot, but too many partitions. I also wish I had a nice garden tub and make-up kit like my character has in FFXIV.

Why is it so empty?

Btw, Protostar was the best housing company i’ve ever had a delight to be a client from. They knew how to turn money into dreams.

It was an original shot to emphasize the pet. There was a lot more going on that in and around that hovel than that pic will ever justify.

Furthermore, I had 6 (?) other housing projects on the go. To which I believe I toured both Skoryy-san and Mr. Wolfyseyes through at some distant point. All those had various themes, elaborations and degrees of detail running through it. I was going to document them all at some point…but never got around to it. They are all gone now, like tears in the rain. :(

Good shots this week!

The Morninglight cabin in Secret World Legends.
We have been using this for RP as the House of Light Farmhouse for years. I’ve obviously modified this picture a bit for the holidays and to remove the Morninglight elements.

It has a fireplace, TV, kitchen and some other nice usable features. It’s open to the world, so it would be nice to have an instanced version.

I’ll try to post a few more shots later :)

It looks really nice inside and out and is thematic (at least during the winter months ;) ) for RP. Nice balcony, too

10,000 players jumped at the same time and the severs all crashed!

PC, Xbox, and PS4 all went down!

Bwahahahahaha, this is probably the most awesome thing that could have happened!

Pushing my throttle to full when DrKaii gave word to engage on stream is a gaming moment I will never forget, it had me smiling from ear to ear.

The first jump point was behind the sun for me and it wouldn’t let me jump to super cruise or hyperspace :(

I had to pick a destination in system, then make the jump once I was in super cruise.

First jump took like 5 minutes in hyperspace & then the servers crashed while I was in hyperspace to the second system.

About the same here, the mass jump went well and then I got kicked out a few minutes later.

Does my in-game apartment count? Yes, it’s a hot mess…but, it’s my hot mess

“…structure in an MMO that you would love to be your own personal housing…”

There really are some lovely locales in War Thunder to be seen…if one takes the time to admire them. I was so looking forward to acquiring this modest cottage in a scenic western European town.

Former cottage.
