Anthem’s early access launch is already suffering from connection issues

Raise your hand if you’re surprised by this: BioWare’s much-anticipated online shooter Anthem went live for Origin Access subscribers earlier today, but the servers have been suffering under the load of players, resulting in connection issues and server outages much akin to the ones that vexed the game’s VIP and public demos. Apparently, many players attempting to log in to the game have been unable to get past the title screen, their progress blocked by a message saying that the Anthem service is currently unavailable.

EA has taken to Twitter to tell players that it’s aware of the issues and is working to identify the cause so it can deploy a fix:

Although by now such launch-day hiccups are commonplace and largely expected, some fans may find it a bit irritating for Anthem’s release day to be marred by these issues in light of the fact that BioWare dealt with very similar server-load-related issues throughout the game’s two demo weekends. Still though, at this point there’s really nothing players can do but sit tight and wait for the devs to patch things up. In the meantime, however, perhaps you’d like to kill a few minutes checking out the Neill Blomkamp-produced live-action Anthem trailer? If you haven’t seen it yet (or if you just want to give it a second viewing), you can find it just below.

I think this game is a blast but take my opinion lightly because I really don’t care about story in video games.

Most of the reviews I’ve seen lambast the story which may or may not be deserved, I have no clue. I am lvl 15ish and so far it’s been pretty damn fun but they’re going to need to do more with this game. It’s a great template but it’s not enough yet.

Luckily they have an ambitious road map.

I feel sorry for anyone interested in Anthem who hasn’t ever played SWTOR because they have no idea what they’re in for, but the SWTOR players trying to play Anthem? No pity for them at all. You should know better.

An online game having connection issues on its very first couple of hours?!? Welcome to literally EVERY online game ever lmao.

Plus, its only early access, whoopty do lol.

I would have guessed there weren’t enough Origin Access subscribers to clog up much of anything, but in taking a moment to think about it, it would seem that a huge percentage of people who wanted to play Anthem subbed to the service just for that reason. So I guess it does make a bit of sense.

Oh! C’mon there were some issues connecting the game in the first hour…
Everything is going smooth except for a crash i had.
Game runs smooth on my gtx 1070 all maxed Ultra settings.
Loving the game so far

Yes, because you personally didn’t have many issues that must mean that everybody else is just making them up or exaggerating. It’s all just a big conspiracy, you’ve uncovered it!

Sorry I went to edit my comment below, and when I pressed post it was too late to edit it :P

This is what I wanted to add in:

* There are other people still now reporting connection and disconnect issues. So for a great many of people it was far more than an hour. Yes, some of you are able to get in and play, but a lot of others are having issues doing so still. It doesn’t mean the issues don’t exist, even EA is still tweeting acknowledging the issues!

Reader
Dan McLemore II

RIGHT?!? The game has s few minor issues right at the start of the game and its “the end of the world” lmao.

Reader

I’ve literally had no issues myself but I didn’t log on until noon that day

I hope it doesn’t flop, but no text chat, the plot is on rails, and I have plenty of free third-person shooters available. Not seeing a reason to jump in.

Nothing I’ve seen from them or on Twitch, etc. has in any way made me go “ooh, I gotta have that!” – and there’s absolutely zero goodwill / benefit-of-the-doubt for me with EA/Bioware at this point.

If people I know who are playing it are still playing it a few months from now, and EA hasn’t gone predatory with the monetization, we’ll see. But right now? Meh.

Wait… No text chat?! I am NOT going to play another online game that has no text chat. I went through that with Fallout 76, I will not go through that again.

That is unacceptable for a game on PC. Ooph. But hey this helps me know I’m making the right decision to wait for The Division 2 instead.

Yep, it’s a no go for me as well. I don’t want to have to listen to other players audio crap.

WTF?!?!?! You do realize that Anthem and the Division 2 are literally the same kind of game right? Anthem is far to fast paced for text chat. It doesn’t need it, nor does anybody really want it lmao.

So, yeah, Now that you all have had a chance to snuggle up with the game’s NPCs and plot … Did I not tell you that it was fuckin’jaw dropping?

That as much as the gameplay was on point, the part that knocked me on my ass was the characters and world setting?

I have to admit, it looks simply stunning. My only gripe, teaming up with a squad of other online players is too rushed. I want to take my time to absorb the landscape, gather materials and kill bad guys. But, if your squad gets too far ahead of you, pop goes a loading screen and you are forced ahead to match their location. Ugh. Other than that, so far it’s been a revelation for me (since earlier, I didn’t want to have anything to do with the game).

If you set the party mode to “private” and then launch the game, it will force it into a SP situation.

But they REALLY need to stop fucking around with that and just make a straight forward “Campaign Mode” that is totally balanced for a solo play through.

I’m liking some of the characters, but I feel like the world isn’t that exciting. It’s all pretty samey looking jungles and ruins, and maybe the enemies get diverse further in, but so far I’ve just been fighting the same two types of wildlife (wolves and scorpions) and the scar.

The dominion start showing up later on (Evil human factio / main antagonists) and will throw “Outlaw” Javelins at you that can seriously get in your ass, and then there are some big nasty critters you run into every now and then / the elementals that pop out if relics … But yeah, one weak point that is there is a lot of same-same repetition with the mobs.

They do have several other human and alien factions mentioned in the games lore library, which have not been seen in game yet, so I expect them to expand things in the future.

*shrug*

Once you get to the point of being able to set strongholds to “hard” (or higher) it becomes a bit of a blessing that they don’t have more mob variety, since you start having to memorize attack patterns & weakness on even the trashiest if trash mobs.

Apex has already killed this game. You can say they are different but at the end of the day shooting stuff is shooting stuff. If I’m already having fun shooting stuff in something fresh and new why would I try another game where the goal is shooting stuff? They should have pushed the release back after they saw Apex catch fire the way it has, instead of, releasing this game where you are just shooting stuff.

Reader
Reht

Sorry, don’t accept your premise. There are a lot of shooter gamers who don’t care for or play BR games. It’s not a knock on Apex, seems like a great game for what it is, and it’s something that I and none of my group of gaming friends play BR games; we’re all playing Anthem, until Div 2 comes out.

OK.

I love shooters with team based objectives. I do not like BRs where my point is to run away from a circle and look for weapons.

I dunno, one game is strictly PVP, and the other is strictly PVE.

This isn’t a disastrous case of releasing Battlefield 1 in the same timeframe was Titanfall 2.

Then again, you could be right, one game is worth $60 and the other is f2p.

Reader
Chosenxeno .

I hope I’m wrong. I’ve been playing Anthem since I made my original post. I think it’s pretty awesome. BR isn’t my thing. Unfortunately, it is a thing for a lot of people. It’s disheartening to see(at the time of this post) 100k viewers for Metro and FC5:New Dawn and literally no one(seriously, no one) is streaming Anthem atm. Meanwhile Apex is nearing 350k.

Wow, I just went to peek, and you were not kidding. That is a wimpy Twitch turnout for Anthem. Maybe it’ll go up for the real launch.

Come on, there are 75k Anthem viewers now on Twitch. You can’t say “no one” even if it’s a much smaller number than other games.

Bree Royce

It’s creeping up toward 75k now, yeah, but it should be doing a lot better. The big names aren’t playing it. Surprised to see Apex still topping Fortnite by so much too.

but it should be doing a lot better

Why should it? It doesn’t really do anything majorly different (other than beautiful graphics and flying warframes) than similar PvE 4-player “loot grinders” with “filler” forgettable backstory and I know most people (based on my conversation with them through Discord or on Twitter) do not like this type of gameplay at all (doesn’t matter if it’s Destiny, Warframe or Division), including large streamers (like Lirik, who also disliked such gameplay and only played such games when he was paid to promote them or because other streamers like Shortyy encouraged him to play together).

And in terms of Apex – today was also the day for Code Red Apex tournament, meaning even more reasons for some large streamers to play it and for more viewers to watch it. I’m sure there will be less viewers during other days (though still pretty significant amount).

PvE games never do well unless it is a specific streamer playing the game. Running 5th for a coop pve is respectable imho.

Remember that this just the “EA Access-Premier” PC head start & that the full console release will drop in a week: most of the people who are fans of Anthem are probably either in game right now, or holding off to avoid spoilers till they can get into the game next week.

Everyone who was curious to see how it is, already got an eye full over the last few weeks & things like Metro & New Dawn are brand spanking new and have had nowhere near the level of exposure that Anthem did durring the betas.

Right now there hasn’t been enough time for any notable players worth watching to emerge / everyone is just running low level plot missions … It will probably be at least a month or so before the game gets enough players running Grandmaster content in the end game for there to be something really worth watching.

In all likelihood, Anthem will never hit the big time on twitch … it is more of a YouTube “highlights” type game that is gonna end up being used in a billion fan made music videos.

LoL, I had to check once I said that & sure enough there are already even Nightcore [GMV] videos out:

“Remember that…”

Lol, it is impossible to keep up with EA’s convoluted release schedule of anthem demos.

With the success of Apex I hope they see in the future that, “Hey here is our ****ing game and it’s done. Wanna play it?” can actually turn out to be a crazy overnight success. The young like viral sensations more than the slow roll of development updates imho.

The funniest thing about Apex is that Activision would be nothing without Infinity Ward > they pissed Infinity Ward away because Infinity Ward asked for funding > Infinity Ward not only chokes out Activision (date TBD) but saves EA’s ass from the fire.

Imagine at any point letting those guys go. How incredibly stupid. I have no doubt Activision will do it again in some other form.

I hate EA but I really love IW obviously :P

it was at 110k this afternoon. It also doesn’t surprise me, the game, while fun to play, isn’t particularly fun to watch. Even though i don’t like BR, it’s more fun to watch because of its pace.

I wouldn’t say Apex killed it, but I agree, much more people are playing Apex now. I see it all over many Discord servers, very few active Anthem players now (I only count people with “playing” status, not “streaming”).

As for “pushing back” – I’m not sure that would’ve helped. What they should’ve done is add a good PvP mode to Anthem, because a lot of players will get bored very quickly farming bullet sponge AI enemies (seen that happen before in every such game I played – Destiny 2, Division and so on), and after you will do that – there’s nothing else to do but to quit the game.

P.S: before anyone will reply “but I like shooting at dumb AI monsters” – good for you, however this doesn’t change the fact that Anthem would be much more popular and for much longer time if it had a variety of PvP modes in an addition to current mode.

Other people have already replied this into oblivion saying most of what I’d want to say. A Battle Royale game is not remotely the same as a story and co-op shooter. They are not the same type of game at all, I mean seriously, AT ALL! “Both involve shooting” yeah okay :P These are about as far apart as two games involving shooting can be.

Did you think this game was a Battle Royale game or something? I don’t get how you can compare the two unless you like had no idea what this game actually was?

a story and co-op shooter

But there’s no “story”. Unless you count that generic crap they thrown in just to provide the reason to send you to different location ;-)

A game with “story” would be Metro: Exodus. Which right now has more viewers than Anthem (because many people are genuinely curious and interested in its story) – the Metro has 99k viewers and Anthem has around 52k (which is lower than yesterday’s).

I’ll be waiting to see how it pans out before I pull the trigger on getting this one or not. Honestly I expect connection issues on day one of any online game, and EA servers are notoriously twitchy at the best of times. The number of people, both PC and console, complaining about server issues in PvZ:GW2 is significant. There was a period where GW1 users on PS3 couldn’t login to the game at all for weeks. Luckily they fixed it but even for the older game that was excessive.
