The Daily Grind: What are you looking forward to the most in WoW Classic?

After all the PR mishaps and layoffs Blizzard’s had since last fall’s BlizzCon, I wouldn’t have been too surprised to see the company delay WoW Classic. But that doesn’t appear to be in the cards: Recent bluename posts on the official forums seem to at least imply we’re still on track for summer.

So I’ve been thinking more about it, whether I’ll play it, even whether we might hire more WoW specialists to cover it. Because there are definitely things I miss! I miss the simplicity of class makeups, of humble questing, of basic dungeoning. I miss my classic prot Warrior and my idiot self who leveled her to 60 as a tank back then. I really miss the classic battlegrounds the most, though. Of everything we lost along the way, the feel of those creaky old battlegrounds and the thousands of hours I spent in them… that’s a temptation.

Are you still thinking about playing WoW Classic this summer, and if so, what are you looking forward to the most in that version of the game?

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!

I would like to try it but all Resto Druids were basically Holy Priest Innervate Bots back in Vanilla. Wake me when they get their Tree Form and become gods for the next 4 years:)

More than likely gonna play. Priest racial specific spells were fun. Sometimes grinding mobs was just good mindless fun.
I think people don’t remember just how long dungeons took…

Will of the Forsaken, in all its classic, un-nerfed glory.

I wont be playing WoW classic but If I would – only for 29 twinking with my old buddies from Almost Thirty guild. Many of them are moving there.

The only thing where vanilla WoW is superior to current WoW is sense of community. Modern WoW with megaserver tech lacks it badly. Also world PvP. Those are things worth playing vanilla for. PvE content (quests, dungeons, raids) in vanilla is just meh

I agree with the community aspect; the mega server is nice because it makes group finding quicker having a larger pool to group with. But you never see the same people twice.

In modern WoW – it feels rare to even see someone from your server in the open world. Let alone that one alliance player that used to gank you while leveling that you can now get revenge on.

I was thinking about the lvl 29 twink battleground brackets once BGs are live. I don’t have the time to play competitive wow — but the level 29 twink scene was a blast.

I’m looking forward to the low-level balance of loot, bag space, gold and skill training costs. I loved all those decisions back in the day, about whether I buy next level Moonfire or go for an 8-slot bag instead, and whether I dump the less profitable-but-stacking items to make space for a more profitable non-stacking item, or whether I chance getting more stacks of the first before I have to head back to town.

Also, I look forward to the fun of pulling more than one mob by accident and knowing I have to leg it :)

Level 1 Death Run, then I dance in Southshore.

And possibly actually getting Verigan’s Fist this time.

I was originally looking for a pipe dream. The ability to relive experiences I had in the past, without grasping the reality that to do that, it required more than just the specific game version I was playing.

Now, Im just looking for something more fun than Battle For Azeroth.

Shouldnt be hard for Vanilla to meet that requirement

I dont have any plans regarding WoW Classic but its an interesting experiment there. It could also start or stop a trend for such servers depending on success

I’m looking forward to being able to play Vanilla on a server that won’t just shut down at any moment. Playing private servers that are located in Europe from the US west coast leads to other issues like ping and how the server is much less populated during NA evenings.

Another couple of annoyances that go along with the private server scene is the lack of moderation. I constantly see players with offensive names and the gold spam is out of control. I expect the classic servers will be much more lively and stable.

Here’s hoping for a west coast RPPVP server. If there is one, that’s where I’ll be.
Can’t wait to get in there!

I’m really really looking forward to the slower pace in combat, levelling and dungeons! All this hectic, breakneck-paced activity with random strangers in modern “games” (and yes, mostly in modern WoW) doesn’t lead to a feeling of accomplishment anymore. It’s remarkably like the “empty calories” that dieters always go on about.
Now, I know that Classic WoW is not going to change this; in fact, it’s absurd to play something that I have spent quite a lot of time with, all those years ago. But I’ll still play it; I’m in fact more hyped for it than for pretty much any game in the last decade. I absolutely want another rhythm, the see-other-people-help-em-out, know-who-is-on-your-server and know-who-is-doing-what that vanilla WoW had back then.
I’m pretty certain there will be a huge amount of competitive, self-aggrandizing dolts on there, too. Gamer Mentality has hugely changed in fourteen years, I’m certain that there will be a ton of streamers and raid guilds coming in from private servers that are itching to demonstrate their “mastery” of the system and hence, their superiority. Granted, it’s impressive to do a Naxxramas full clear in something like 75 minutes, but you can only do this by bringing a mentality and competitive “edge” to the game that is, to me, really “out of tune” with vanilla WoW.

So, Classic will be a very different beast to Vanilla. Still, really looking forward to it.
