Overwatch announces its upcoming Archives event, Storm Rising, with new lore teasers

(We’ve updated the end of this piece with the formal announcement.)

The folks at Blizzard have dropped a pair of mysterious Overwatch lore teasers, serving as an announcement of the 2019 Archives event and perhaps even hinting at a new map and/or character. The first of the two teasers takes the form of an in-universe newspaper article from the Havana Sun that details how mega-popular rum distillery Don Rumbotico burned down in a decidedly suspicious fire, forcing its owners to sell it off for pennies on the dollar to an enigmatic, sinister organization.

The second, a video posted to the Overwatch Twitter account, features a recording of a new character, a woman known only as Sojourn, proposing to Overwatch Commander Morrison (aka Soldier: 76) a mission to investigate — and presumably capture — Doomfist’s accountant and Talon bigwig Maximilien. The audio log gives a name to the upcoming Archives event, Storm Rising, and provides a few key details about the mission’s background: It takes place in the wake of the King’s Row Uprising, and it will feature a strike team comprised of Tracer, Mercy, Winston, and Genji.

Beyond that, though, details are still scarce, though speculation — and the aforementioned newspaper article — seems to suggest that the operation may introduce a new map set in Havana, and some players have begun whispering about the mysterious Sojourn’s prospects as the game’s next playable character. Whatever the case, we can probably expect more details about the Storm Rising Archives event in the next week or so, prior to the event’s commencement on April 16th.

Update
Now it’s official – dated for April 16th.

“The Overwatch Archives seasonal event returns Tuesday, April 16th with an all-new mission, Storm Rising! In Storm Rising, play as Tracer, Genji, Winston or Mercy as the Overwatch heroes pursue the Omnic Talon boss, Maximilien. As a stormfront moves in over Max’s Cuban hideout, the heroes race against the clock to extract him before he disappears again. With returning Archives missions, Uprising and Retribution, players will be able to dive deeper into the history of Overwatch with replayable missions that reveal pivotal moments in the organization’s history all while earning rewards in the process – more than 160 cosmetic items! The time is now to chase the truth! Welcome to Storm Rising!”

Yay…. more lore and hints of a new character…. How about make a new mode? I think king of the hill, and escort is alright (and small scale Fred for all is meh), but when they are literally the only modes in the game for most, it gets boring. Off the top of my head, multiple capture points or twin escorts would spice up the game more.

Please stop. I stopped on your second line.

Battle Royale is essentially king of the heal. We dont fucking need a battle royale mode in every fucking game that is developed.

Oh boy, can’t wait for more background filler that doesn’t progress the story beyond Wintson’s home invasion!

Theres few actual things in games that bug me but the whole current gen “watercooler gamer” idea of “who cares about story, i just want lore!” that showed up this gen is crazy. Remember last gen when people were upset Destiny’s core story was crap and bungie just said “yeah but all this grimoire lore tho” and now you see people saying “Shame Hallow Knights gatekeeping gameplay keeps you away from all that lore”.

“Lore” should be flavour, like item descriptions that flesh out the world building. It shouldn’t be a substitute for story. Thats like replacing a novel with a tabloid gossip magazine. Sure people will use it as natter fodder but its doesn’t do a game any favours when actual story is left on the wayside.

Or in Overwatches case literally not existing after the opening cutscene at all.

Its a shooter, not an RPG. You should consider it a bonus that they include lore. Do you see lore in CS:GO? How about TF2? BFV? COD?
