MMOARG Harry Potter Wizards Unite has officially launched – a day early

“A wizard is never late. Nor is he early. He arrives precisely when he means to.” -Obi-Wan Kenobi, probably.

Now that we’ve ticked off all the Harry Potter fans and the Lord of the Rings fans and confused the Star Wars fans, the good news is this: Harry Potter Wizards Unite has apparently already launched for some players in some regions. It was intended to launch tomorrow, but it’s in the wild right now, and as MOP’s Andrew Ross has confirmed for us, folks are already in and playing. “It’s out!” he says. “You can use pics of yourself in your profile, make a wand, join a house, from the start!”

Niantic, best known for its wildly popular MMOARG Pokemon Go (which itself was preceded by the groundbreaking Ingress), first announced the title back in 2017 as a mobile multiplayer augmented reality title, right around the time we started calling it “hipwoo.” The game spent two months in beta in Oceania, but this week it rolls out to the rest of the world.

They talk about the similarity to Pokemon Go, as something bad, but these games have the same developer(https://rawg.io/developers/niantic-inc). They make the same game, they just improve it with each version.

Phone isn’t supported :( *sighs*

But i think i just got a WoW Classic beta invite (I don’t have an active sub so it wasn’t for the stress test…) so that’s something at least. I’m not upgrading my phone for a mobile game.

I’m glad you got a Beta invite for Classic, Blizz I,m annoyed with since I’m subbed and I have none but oh well.

Did you maybe buy 6 months of sub time and thought it ended sooner than it did perhaps, I only ask because they were basing these Beta Handouts off of active accounts active play time, that’s what the Blizz Rep told me when I filed a ticket a month ago.

It was a false alarm – it lets me install it, but i can’t run it without an active subscription, and i’m not going to resub for a beta test that will get wiped.

If you have an android, google “Harry Potter Wizards Unite APK”, as I had the same issue and used that as a work around.

Stylo 3, and nope…work around doesn’t work. It just pops up saying “your device isn’t supported” and won’t allow me to download it.

Played it. It’s pokemon go. Except instead of throwing pokeballs, you draw spells (trace a pattern) on the screen to capture magical thingies. You now have the entire experience.

Fortresses are pretty different compared to gyms.

I have no interest in this at all, I’m not a harry potter fan and I still use a windows phone so probs couldn’t get it anyway. However, I have a question.

This game, and pokemon go, tend to get referred to as MMOARGs.

I am curious: what are the massively multiplayer online features?

My understanding of Pokemon Go was that you could only ever interact with one person at a time, so it didn’t have any MMO features at all. The massively multiplayer part occurred in real life, not online.

I am assuming that HPWU is the same – its not actually massively multiplayer at all and has just been mis-labelled again, further diluting the genre. But, on the off-chance I’m wrong, I’d love to know as that would actually be a massive breakthrough and would deserve celebrating!

In Pokemon Go, you can get together with friends or rando strangers to take on a gym or a giant monster.

it is still a thing as I saw just yesterday on the way home, like six scruffy dudes getting off work and all wandering to a micro park, like 200 sq foot, which is a Pokemon Gym.

So I guess HP will do similar things. Given what Niantic has learned from Pokemon Go I suspect it will be even more monetized. ‘Stop by the Starbucks to talk to Horace Flutterbutt to recharge your spell energy. Get five BONUS energy if you purchase something while there.’

I was in real life mode and tried to use an Avada Kedavra spell to take out a Cornish Pixie but my boss was in the frame.

Now I’m on the run for murder.

Thanks Niantic.

On the plus side, three-day weekend

I have a few Co Workers I’d like to try that on, unfortunately it’s a Hospital so they might be able to bring them back to life in a Code Blue, and then I’d have to help them recover ( as part of my job, like a hell of my own making).

I am still not entirely sure what this is. A pokemon go like experience where you run around clearing “nodes” in the wild or something?

I think that’s it exactly.

Huh, neat.
