The Daily Grind: What would your ultimate MMO character creator look like?

In the wide field of MMOs, there are great character creators and there are… there are the less-good ones. You know, the ones that give you the choice of three faces (one of which has to be “old crone nobody picks”) and two shades of robes. The ones where developers mistakenly think that players will be more invested in their gorgeous game worlds than the piddly avatars they create.

I’m always happy to experience a robust character creator that lets me fine-tune that perfect character. Even World of Warcraft is stepping up its game with more character optimization choices come this fall’s expansion.

But today, I want to hear what you’d love to see in a character creator if you got to call the shots. What would it look like? What elements would be important for you to include?

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!

Something that has less than 10 slider, but still can make awesome and unique characters. Don’t give me a ton of sliders, I’ll make an abomination.

A character creator that has more than a tiny handful of nice looking short male hairstyles.

It’s usually like…here’s bald, balding, mohawk, and some really bland cheesy 90’s flat top / crew cut or something, maybe some DBZ super spiked hair.

Then there’s like 47 different variations of pony tail, top knot, braids, etc.

There are tons of short male hairstyles they *could* do, particularly in a fantasy or sci-fi setting, but I feel like the best I ever get is like one decent hairstyle and maybe 1-2 not terrible hairstyles.

It’s funny how in 2020 if some MMOs have a human character that they don’t cover all the skin tones or even Asian features. Then I think back to Anarchy Online even though the character were low poly they did have it all covered.

Believe it or not, the main reason I want to try PSO2 is the character creation is filled with so many options that you could spend hours creating your character and that sounds fun to me. The rest of the game is meh to me now.

More games with male packages instead of being flat as a board. I don’t tuck in RL either, thank you. After all, with the massive breasts and bootys in most games, it’s only fair.

It’d definitely have to have a full range of skin tones for a start. Realistic and not so realistic.
Regardless of species therex need to be both male and female options, none of that gender locking crap.
If they have horns etc they need to be independent from the facial options (looking at you FFXIV Au-ra)
be the same for hair.
Independent facial components would be a boon. selection of eyes, selection of noses, selection of mouths, selection of ears etc

A slider system for character build (weight, height, muscle tone)
Booty sliders, tail length and ear length (if applicable)
Finishing up with at least a preview of race/class/evolved class(job) for outfits.

I would love to have a character creator that allowed non-White players to make a character that resonates for them. I would like a full range of skin tones, including realistic Black skin tones that aren’t purple or some kind of chalky chocolate. Not all Asians or LatinX people are White and they should have choice as well. How about a wide range of facial features for all characters, and dear God, some realistic hair for Black people and other folks that don’t have straight hair. All of the above are already technologically possible. There’s no reason why they are not now included.

I think I am a bit different from the norm. As a fat bald white male I like my main characters to be a beautiful slender black females with gorgeous hair. If I cant make this character I start the game feeling a bit disappointed. :)

Also, I like a bit of realism such that, if I create a tiny character I would have less strength and mass than if I may create large one. This mass should affect game elements like blocking, pushing and my ability to resist physical forces.

Lastly, what I create in the CC should be what I see in the game and not some dumbed down version.

Anything that allows me to look like a Warhammer 40k Ork!

Orcs are my favourite fantasy race, and Warhammer 40k Orks are the best variety (minus the cheesy voiceovers we’ve started getting in recent years).

Beyond that, im not too fussy. Mostly all you can usually see is height, weight and hairstyle so thats mostly all I care about. A good range of hairstyles, some big beards, and im happy.

My ultimate character creator would allow all possible options to be applied to same character, with a “gender” selection only affecting the description text for your character. This means that the presence of certain noticeable body parts and their size would never be affected by a “gender” selector, same goes for hair types or things like the type of clothing you can wear. Yes, this would require more work for character artists to make sure that the clothing can fit all possible combinations of body parts and sizes and hair styles but hey, we are talking about ultimate character creation so this does not really matter.
