If you’re not among those who are following SMITE design director A.J. Walker on Twitter, then you might have missed a thread with some pretty important details about the game’s future moving in to the rest of this year and the early party of next year. In it, he discusses how the dev team has run in to some challenges with the fully work-from-home setup which will ultimately see no new sixth god to the roster this year. “We have seen a lot of success in these tough times, but it’s taken a toll on us too,” Walker writes. “At the start of the year we had aimed for an additional god launch beyond what was revealed at last HRX. That was too ambitious given all that’s happened in 2020.”
What the rest of the year will feature is a rework to Loki in October, a “crazy” new Battle Pass for November, and the release of the game’s fifth new god for Season 7. Then, in 2021, players will be entering Season 8 which will include a new Conquest map in January and the promise of a “highly anticipated god” in February. All told, Season 8 will see six new gods added to the roster as well as “plenty of other highlights.”
As for the game’s current state, notes for the Odyssey: Reckoning update are live with details on the titular event’s gameplay and rewards, some quality-of-life improvements, a look at several new god skins, and a host of bug fixes.
