Overwatch floats ‘priority passes’ while Hearthstone brings back the Darkmoon Faire

Overwatch Game Director Jeff Kaplan clearly got out of the house this past week, donned his iconic sunglasses, and addressed the community in a new developer update. One of the big reveals that he dropped on us is that the team shooter is going to be introducing something called “priority passes” in the near future that can be used to send your character to the front of the line while queuing up for bouts.

The idea here is that Blizzard is trying to incentivize players to queue for multiple roles — “flex queues” — to speed up the formation of matches. Players who participate in flex queues will earn a number of priority passes to use for their damage-dealing classes. Winners will get more priority passes, but even losers are able to earn some for future fights.

Over at Hearthstone, the card game is running the Darkmoon Faire event with the return of the four Old Gods and a new keyword called “corrupt.” Blizzard also hinted at what will come in the final phase of the Year of the Phoenix.

“In Phase 3, you can expect several major updates, including balance patches, new Battlegrounds Heroes and minions, a seasonal event, and what was previously spell-locked—updates for Duels, a Mini-Set of 35 cards set for release before the next expansion, and info on another new game mode,” the studio said.

Haven’t played Overwatch in I don’t know how long. Remember going into lots of fights with no healers, no support because I was just tired of being the one to “do the right thing” all the time.

The role queue + 2/2/2 mandatory team comps fixed that to a degree, however that means that damage dealers have a substantially longer queue time than supports/tanks.

That is a hell of a hot mess of an idea. I know Overwatch softly tanked in general interest after it was Blizzards latest sacrifice on the esports altar but good lord thats not going to solve a thing.

It does seem like a mess. I haven’t played in awhile, quit shortly after Doomfist was added (not because of him, he was kind of fun, but that’s a good reference point), but back then you just queued up and played without selecting a role and even then the queues had slowed down immensely from the early days. It must be awful now.

So if there is a shortage of healer/support/tank players, and this system gets people to queue up as “Ill be whatever is needed” which forces them into that role…. how does that not solve a thing?

Yeah it’s basically a nicer version of League of Legend’s autofill system where it’ll occasionally throw you into an undesired role if queues are too busy. If you complete the match, you at least get autofill protection for a few games. But it even happens in ranked and your League Points/MMR do take a hit for losing. Queue dodging only delays the inevitability that you eventually get autofilled.

OW doing a voluntary version of that is a lot better than forcing folks into it.

Why do you think the problem is there to begin with when the game didn’t launch with it because “we need to balance for esports now” made it a role based game without any thought on the effect of none competitive users?
