Blizzard ramps up hiring for its unannounced online game

Blizzard Entertainment is up to something — something big — these days behind closed doors. We’ve known that the World of Warcraft studio was forming a team to work on a Warcraft mobile game and some sort of online multiplayer project, but now things are getting serious as another jobs call has gone out for 16 positions for the game.

The “unannounced PC/console project” is keeping most of its details under wraps, although we can ascertain from the job descriptions that this one is some sort of online action shooter. Obviously, there is a possibility that this has something to do with Overwatch (especially since Overwatch 2 is in the works), but it does kind of sound like it’s an unrelated, completely new project.

“This is hands down the best project and team I’ve ever worked with in my career,” Senior Artist Dan John Cox teased.

So I guess these new jobs require different skills from the folks who got laid off?

I think what they WON’T do is make a game that cannibalizes the population from any of their other games. So highly unlikely to be an MMO or a Battle Royale.

Blizzard should poach from CIG Austin– they’re used to being treated poorly…

I don’t about CIG, but you have kotaku who’s had a history of sensationalism with unnamed sources vs. actual employees saying their experience was different. I don’t know which way to lean, but it seems like’s far from something that should be used as an example of employees who are used to being mistreated.

Even negative reviews of the company seems to say that the middle management is alright. They mostly seem to dislike the upper management, pay scale, and lack of overall direction.

A Destiny style game was what Titan was most likely aiming to be, before it got canceled.

Blizzard’s M.O. is to take a game from a genre they currently dont do, and make it better.

– Starcraft/Warcraft = RTS
– WoW = MMORPG
– Overwatch = FPS multiplayer arena.
– HOTS = Moba
– Diablo = ARPG (they actually sorta lead the way with this genre, rather than copying it)

They tried their hand at the 2d animate adventure game way back when (and canceled it before it came out). They also tried the 3rd person shooter with Starcraft Ghost (and canceled it before it came out).

That leaves only a few new genre options for them if they are “shooting” for an FPS genre.

FPS single player – Think Doom, Half Life, etc
FPS co-op shooter – Think Borderlands
FPS RPG – Think Fallout, or even Cyberpunk.
FPS MMO – Think Destiny. (but as stated at the start, Titan was going to most likely be this, and they canceled it. So unless they are bringing it back….)

Personally… id love a Borderlands style co-op game.

Id also love a purely single player FPS game like Fallout 3 and 4.

I don’t see Blizz going full singleplay at any point. Their entire ecosystem is designed around GaaS, including the social platform for match making and collaboration.

What ever this new game is, it’ll definitely have a multiplayer component to it.

Well, it wouldnt be too hard to go from single player to co-op.

I would have absolutely played Fallout 3 and 4, as well as Oblivion and Skyrim through with a friend. So if Blizzard makes a similar game just with co-op, Im still happy. My ultimate dream would be a Skyrim like game, set in the Diablo universe, with 2 person co-op.

Id even settle for a Overwatch themed 4 person co-op story game (ie: borderlands)… or even similar, but in the Starcraft universe.

Oh yeah, co-op will definitely be a thing. I’m just not expecting Blizz to do singleplayer-only games at this point.

Survival Game incoming.

Personally I would be interested in a Blizzard spin on Destiny. The core gameplay of Destiny is fun but the game is built on a huge pile of spaghetti. Imagine a Destiny with better inventory management

World of Starcraft.

That’s my dream. Not that I love the franchise, but I do want to see some more sci-fi MMO’s out there that aren’t super realistic visually.

I’d bet my best Cummerbund it’s not a Starcraft or Diablo “MMORPG”. Maybe a starcraft MMOFPS.

They should hire moi! As I got good experience in armchair developing… >.>

One thing we know about Blizzard is they rarely have their own ideas. Like others have said they are most likely stealing another companies idea and rebranding it as usual.

Hence Paladins vs Overwatch, Paladins failed to advertised while Overwatch was over hyped. Poor Hi-Rez.

Reader
Fisty

Wait. Are you saying Overwatch was taken from Paladins?

Reader
Slaasher

It seems backward, doesn’t it?

It’s going to be what Overwatch was originally supposed to be. They scrapped the original vision of an MMO because at the time Destiny was a part of the portfolio. Well, now that Bungie has left the building and has made some missteps with Destiny since leaving, the door is open for some competition, and guess who already has a successful IP and assets just waiting to hop into that market?

Do i need a phone for it?

nope, you’re gonna need a smartwatch though
