The Stream Team: Canoe racing and milk fountains in ARK: Genesis 2

Last week, Massively OP’s MJ took her first steps into ARK’s latest and last new map, Genesis 2. Now she’ll be taking her first canoe ride; it turns out Genesis 2 has a canoe race for a mission. There are also a number of new creatures tamed to show off, including one that apparently creates a milk fountain. Don’t ask — just see.  Join us live at 2:00 p.m. for more exploration of this crazy space ship.

Nothing alarming behind the spoiler screen. I just decided to put the post there because it got kind of stupid big, and isn’t really related to the stream. Just some Ark thoughts I felt like writing down somewhere other people could see them if they care. Really, most of the stuff I write I could probably just type up in Notepad. Then exit without saving like the guy did at the end of “Stand By Me,” and nothing of value would be lost.

Wall of Text cloaking device: Activated.
This is my personal opinion, and I’m mostly just “thinking out loud.” But I kind of like the weird mix of sci-fi and fantasy elements they’ve ended up with. I do think that they’re making a lot of it up as they go, and a fair amount is probably due to shifting priorities as the people actually directly in charge of development have changed. But the Obelisks were there from the start, and the title of the game is literally “Ark.” That kind of implies that *something* more was going on than just “dinosaurs on an uncharted island.”

And I honestly like some of the original creatures. My original “from the beginning” save got corrupted because I had a mod that hadn’t been updated, and when a patch broke it super hard, it turns out that it also affected all the saves that included any version of that mod. (The exact mod doesn’t matter because it no longer exists at all.) But since I started a new playthrough, two of my most constant companions have been Backpack the bulbdog and Dune the morellatops. Along with occaisionally Travel the yutyrannus and Typhoon the crystal wyvern.

I love dinosaurs. A lot. But Ark is probably as close as anyone is ever going to get to “explore an alien world, and tame all the things!” Which is a game that I think I’d like to play, and which will almost certainly never exist. Plus, the mix of dinosaurs and weird beasties means that there’s a layer of the familiar too. It’s not *just* fifteen different flavors of alien spider.

I’m honestly not that optimistic about Ark 2. In my opinion, Wildcard doesn’t have a great track record as a development studio, and Snail Games is worse. I’m not as angry about “Selling Scorched Earth during Early Access” as some people, at least not directly. I *am* upset that some people at the company made deliberate choices to take actions that put them in the position of needing a giant pile of money on short notice. And especially that doing so resulted in Scorched Earth being dumped onto Steam as DLC *way* before it was finished. (It’s the only “story” map with no Ascension boss fight or cinematic, among a bunch of other stuff that doesn’t matter enough to list.)

I’m also not happy that it felt like they all but abandoned Extinction to secretly move most of the team to the sister studio (with the name the filter hates) so they could take a ton of stuff that *should* have been improvements to Ark and try to turn it into a new PVP gankbox. And I’ve got a strong suspicion that the reason Genesis 2 got delayed for months and months past the initial tentative release window had less to do with covid and way more to do with how many people it must have taken to make an “in-engine” cinematic where Digital Vin Diesel could punch a rex in the face.

In the short term though, I guess it doesn’t even matter. Ark 2 is at least a couple of years away (2023? Maybe?) Based on how they’ve handled Atlas, I have a *lot* of potential concerns about how they might design it. At the same time, it’s utterly pointless to start worrying about a game that won’t be out for years. (So I’ll have to try to remind myself NOT to do that.)

Outside of mixed feelings regarding the tek stuff, I think this is a common sentiment among the ARK fanbase.

One of the best games I ever played. Also one of the buggiest and mismanaged projects I’ve ever seen, and the studio management are just unrepentent villains, skipping out on an unfinished project.
