The Daily Grind: What’s more likely to drive you out of an MMO – the gameplay or the fans?

Today’s Daily Grind was inspired entirely by this tweet about just traveling along enjoying the heck out of something without interacting with the “fans.” I feel this tweet in my bones.

I seldom get to take my own advice here; I’m always reading Reddit, dipping into the forums, scoping out Discords, trying to figure out what both the vocal playerbases and the silent majorities in MMOs are agitating for today, and it can be exhausting. So while we spend the bulk of our time discussing the content and the gameplay of MMOs, I suspect that it’s the fans – or rather, the “fans” – that bring us the most frustration. Toxic players have driven me out of MMOs – even MMOs I love – faster than any bad patch.

Eh, sometimes I just wanna be that clueless guy on the train, enjoying MMOs obliviously.

Let’s pretend this is an entirely binary question: What’s more likely to drive you out of an MMO – the gameplay or the fans?

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!
