The Daily Grind: When has an MMO community impressed you?

Every so often.

Yes, a lot of time MMO communities will disappoint you, make mistakes, do bad things that they shouldn’t, and so forth. But sometimes they do something good. Like, the number of times that World of Warcraft’s community has gone to bat for awful people is ridiculously high… but the community also has gone to bat for charity more than once, and it rose up and pushed back against the RealID fiasco so effectively that Blizzard changed course immediately. Sure, I can be disappointed in the community for not pushing back against union-busting or sexual harassment with the same tenacity, but the RealID thing? That was commendable.

No community is made up solely of good people and every community makes some bad decisions. But I think every MMO community has at least once incident wherein the group rises up collectively and does something good with its collective voice. So when has an MMO community impressed you? When have you been happily surprised by something that a community joined together to accomplish?

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!
