The Daily Grind: Is the age of superhero MMOs past?

Is it just me, or does it seem like nobody is that hot to trot for superhero MMORPGs these days? A few years ago, it felt as though there was a lot more enthusiasm for plugging into the City of Heroes rogue server or lapping up any details of upcoming projects. Even DCUO was (and probably still is) Daybreak’s most lucrative property.

I don’t see as much City of Heroes chatter these days, and it’s rare that you see optimism for upcoming spiritual successors such as Ship of Heroes. It’s made me wonder if the superhero genre’s been out of spotlight for so long that fans have moved to other realms. Plus, the measure of “superhero fatigue” in movies and TV as of recent years can’t be helping any.

So is the age of the superhero MMO already behind us — or do you have hope for a resurgence in the future? Are any of you playing one in 2023?

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!
