The Daily Grind: Would you have played the Overwatch 2 MMO Blizzard envisioned?

Turns out esports are terrible.

One of the overlooked bits from the mea culpa blog from the Overwatch 2 PvE cancelation fiasco last week is the unprompted reveal that what was canceled was basically the MMO future of the game.

“The Overwatch team, especially at its inception, considered itself an MMO development team. As we transitioned away from that original concept and started creating Overwatch, we included plans to one day return to that scope. We had a crawl, walk, run plan. Overwatch was the crawl, a dedicated version of PvE was the walk, and an MMO was the run. It was built into the DNA of the team early on, and some of us considered that final game a true realization of the original vision of Project Titan.”

I dunno whether Blizzard thought that revelation would help the whole situation, but I suspect it just made the whole thing sting more – for MMO players, at least. Or did it? Let’s ask them! Would you have played the someday-Overwatch 2 MMO Blizzard envisioned? Or do you think trying to make it happen was always a pipe dream anyway?

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!
