The Daily Grind: Should MMO tutorials continue through the whole game?

A while back, there was a random thread on the Elder Scrolls Online subreddit from a poor lost soul desperate to figure out what in the world the skill advisor in-game was telling him to do – and bumbling into it reminded me that the skill advisor exists! For those who have likewise forgotten, ZeniMax Online Studios rolled out the feature way back in 2018 as a leveling tool that essentially gives helpful tips on what players should do with their build as they level up.

Now, there are lots of MMOs that present players with level-up screens and tips, so ESO is not the odd-man out here. But whether those screens are actually useful to players is another story; in a lot of MMOs, I find those types of extended tutorials offer a bunch of info I don’t need and neglect a bunch of info I could’ve used. The general consensus from the ESO community all these years later is that the skill advisor is pretty good for leveling and new players, but eventually players should wean themselves from it and construct a proper build for themselves based on out-of-game info.

Are these types of ongoing tutorial systems of use to you? Should MMO tutorials continue through the whole game? Which MMOs have the best ones that actually extend well past the game’s introduction?

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!
