Multiversus made waves – and not the good kind – when a year ago Warner Bros. and Player First Games closed down the super popular open beta for the title, in spite of the fact that it had already released seasons and charged players for microtransactions and indeed hadn’t really made clear that the open beta wasn’t anything but a soft launch. It caused plenty of consternation for players and fans of the breakout hit, but the devs were adamant that the game needed more work before an official launch in 2024.
Last week, the game’s official social media channels began whirring to life after many months of quiet, and now, the weird saga is coming to an end, as Player First Games’ Tony Huynh announced this morning via video that the game has a proper launch date: May 28th.
“Warner Bros. Games today announced that MultiVersus, the free-to-play platform fighter videogame featuring an all-star cast of iconic characters, will officially launch on May 28, 2024. MultiVersus will release with a new PVE mode, more heroes and personalities added to the roster, additional stages based on reimagined universes and environments, first-class online play, improved visuals, and much more. MultiVersus will be available as a free download for PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4 consoles, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One consoles, and PC (Steam and Epic Games Store) with full cross-play and cross-progression support.”
Do note that folks who paid into the earlier open beta keep all their stuff, and the launch version will be free-to-play. Huynh says that the team has “rebuilt the game from the ground up to support [its] new netcode” for better online play, as well as added “some really exciting brand-new personalities to the roster, along with more stages from worlds we have yet to explore.” The game is a UE5 title now, so expect improvements to graphics and lighting too. “Shaggy’s sandwiches have never looked better,” he quips. And as the blurb suggests, this version will come with a PvE mode too.
