Wayfinder says disentangling from Digital Extremes caused its lapse in updates and communication

"Stuff takes time the second lawyers are involved."

Airship Syndicate’s multiplayer RPG Wayfinder continues to stay live, though you’d be forgiven for assuming that might not be the case since it hasn’t had any major update since February and has otherwise been generally quiet on its website and socials. So, whatever happened to this one?

Those who visit the game’s site are likely going to see a pop-up prompt noting that Airship Syndicate is still working on taking full ownership of the Wayfinder IP, and it’s that ongoing separation (first announced last year) that’s primarily the source of the radio silence. Most of the latest discussion is tucked in Discord, with the devs starting March off with a “state of things” address that checks in for nervous fans:

“Hey everyone. I know that you’re all eager to get information on the latest updates for Wayfinder. I wanted to quickly provide some context as to why we haven’t shared much recently.

“We are currently working through the transition of service from DE to Airship. As you can imagine, this is a significant undertaking, and it directly affects aspects such as release dates and content—your primary concerns, which we fully acknowledge. We are very keen to share information with our players, but at the moment, we lack concrete details to provide. Sharing premature information could lead to further disappointment and raise questions that we, frankly, do not have the answers to just yet.

“The moment we have updates, we will share them here first. Thank you for your understanding and support.”

The post explains that customer service matters, login servers, and account data are some of the matters that still have to be handed over and thus are effectively halting most development processes, although Airship Syndicate doesn’t appear to be laying blame on former publisher Digital Extremes. “[T]o be clear, I’m not shit talking them (DE), just stuff takes time the second lawyers are involved,” reads part of the post – a point that was later walked back as “slightly reductive.”

The studio otherwise tries to explain its rationale for not sharing more insight into gameplay updates, arguing that releasing previews like a new character trailer without a timeline for release is a bad experience for players; moreover, the team says both DE and Airship have no timelines for when transition will complete yet.

“I know that you guys want us to talk about the future and we’ll be able to do that soon. I’m here to assure you that we do have a future,” it reads. “I know we’ve been quiet for a while, and we hope to return to talking to everyone soon. Wayfinder is not going away. I realize those are just words right now but please be patient with us while we continue to work through the transition.”
