Here’s one that’s been out for a while but hasn’t crossed our desks until recently: Say hello to Necesse, a 2019 single-player and multiplayer early access RPG that blends procedural generation, open building, colony management, and delves into dungeons and boss fights, all in a retro sprite art 2-D style.

“In Necesse you play as yourself, a lonesome hero who has to start from nothing to achieve greatness. Build a powerful settlement and recruit settlers to colonize your base and get them to help out with the mundane tasks such as farming, wood cutting and sorting your storage inventories. You can even take it a step further and equip your settlers with powerful gear and have them serve as your bodyguards on adventures! Invite all of your friends and together you can explore procedural generated caves filled with secrets, loot and powerful bosses that drop even more loot! Defeat bosses and expand your base until you reach the end-game where the mysterious incursions await…”

Necesse has pinged our radar not only for its multiplayer features – players can establish a server that supports “hundreds of other players” according to its Steam page – but also because it’s heralding a new graphics update that polished up over 3,200 assets in the game as well as added new hairstyles, new effects, and new lighting. The same update has also added multiple items, new monsters, more recipes, and several bug fixes.
