Destiny 2 readies an 8v8 PvP test, plans adjustments to Xur’s wares, accidentally garbles player names

If that headline wasn’t already a clue, the news coming out of Destiny 2 is a little bit of a cornucopia. A potpourri. A melange, if you will. Basically, there’s a lot of little things collectively happening in the looter shooter’s world.

We’ll start with the highlights from the game’s weekly newsletter, which opens with word of an experimental 8v8 sparrow control mode arriving to the Crucible Labs starting today, August 16th. “This is a highly experimental mode as we have never tried to cram this many Guardians into one Crucible match before,” Bungie warns. “Things could get a little hairy. We will be monitoring stability and may turn it off if necessary.”

The rest of the post details a tweak to Xur’s wares arriving August 20th that will shift the Wildcard offer in favor of a random exotic class item or exotic cipher and talks about new weapons coming to the Trials of Osiris next week.

Finally, we can’t close out this news post without sighing in the direction of Bungie’s latest bungle, which saw a “high number” of player names get accidentally changed to placeholder ones. The devs have since identified the issue and have applied a server-side fix to prevent future name destruction, but coming up with options to address accounts that were already affected “will take some time as [the studio’s] path forward will be dependent on fixing the underlying issue.” Free rename tokens are being promised at a later time.
