Here’s how New World’s crossplay, servers, and transfers will work when Aeternum launches

If you remember the New World launch just a few years ago, you may already be wondering whether the Aeternum launch will offer the same sort of server and character chaos. No, my friend, it will be all new chaos! OK, I kid. And Amazon has now posted an FAQ about what to expect from the launch with your characters and where they’ll land, just to make sure everyone is on the same page about server structure. None of the info is new, but it’s complicated, so it’s worth a quick refresher since we’re just a few weeks away.

After all, this is an MMORPG launch! Because it’s still an MMORPG! Ahem.

The key takeaway is that all of the existing servers (including the old fresh start servers) are now designated as legacy servers. New servers that launch with and after Aeternum will be called standard servers. Why does this matter? Because you won’t be able to transfer from legacy to standard servers, but you can move toons from standard to legacy, assuming the target server isn’t already over capacity. Everyone can make a fresh toon on either type of server, just be aware that if you’re trying to team up with friends rolling fresh, they may have to move – or you may have to reroll.

And yes, you can definitely play with console folks – there is crossplay – but there’s no crossprogression, so don’t be thinking you’ll be able to swap back and forth using the same character on your desktop and your couch.
