MassivelyOP’s not-so-serious end-of-the-year awards continue today with our award for the Best worst MMO transmedia synergy. The Golden Yachties series is our run of fauxwards, named in honor of somebody we’ve long forgotten from Old Massively who insisted that surely we make so much money that we’re typing MMO blog posts from a gold-plated yacht. (Joke’s on you; it was always silver. Gold is too heavy.)
And the winner is…
Minecraft x tax filing company H&R Block
I realize Minecraft is not a traditional MMORPG, but it’s multiplayer and has spawned MMOs of its own, so we’re claiming it for the purposes of today’s award, as the blocky sandbox did a promotion with – wait for it – H&R Block this year.
H&R Block, of course, is a well-known tax filing service, and together with Minecraft it unveiled a collaborative “tax-themed gaming experience” in the form of a special Block City map, complete with a tournament, custom game modes, characters, and cosmetics. You gotta hook the kids on a tax-filing brand early, you know. Lock it in.
Naturally, I have a big ol’ list of runners-up!
- Destiny 2 x Mass Effect
- Overwatch 2 x Porsche and x Cowboy Bebop
- World of Tanks x Star Trek and x TMNT
- Genshin Impact x McDonalds and x This Is Food and x The Discovery Channel
- World of Warcraft x Kroger (lol) and x football
- FFXIV x a Japanese camping brand and x Mountain Dew
- Roblox x Carebears and x Poppy Playtime
- Ragnarok Online x Sonic the Hedgehog
- Fortnite x Trevor Noah
- A bunch of gardening games x MiracleGro
