Over the weekend, Raph Koster’s studio formally announced that it’s going to do a Kickstarter for Stars Reach – you know, the spiritual successor to Star Wars Galaxies that we just called our most anticipated MMO of the year. We don’t know how much the team aims to raise yet, but Playable Worlds was very clear that it both needs money and needs to prove there’s interest in order to add to its existing $38M investor haul and move the game to early access.
Koster also said multiple times that he’s aware how most MMO crowdfunding has gone and how badly gamers have been “burned” by Kickstarter. If you need proof, just look at the comments of the Daily Grind we did just a few weeks ago, in which most folks say they’re done with crowdfunding forever!
I wonder if it changes your equation when a game you really want – and actually has a good chance of launching – actually comes along. Will you crowdfund Stars Reach? Is it going to be your exception?
