Welcome back to MassivelyOP’s not-so-serious end-of-the-year awards as we present our award for Best Worst MMO Prank. Yes, it’s the Golden Yachties series, named in honor of those bright sparks absolutely convinced that video game blogging is a lucrative career and we’re all sailing ’round the world on ships of gold. (Stay in school, kids.)
And the winner is…
GLORBO
Over the summer, the World of Warcraft Reddit community got fed up with AI-driven trash websites that scrape content and recombobulate it as fake articles; it retaliated by creating fake Reddit threads about supposedly new content in the game and trying to trick the AI into scraping it. Think of it like the Reddit version of trap streets.
Well, it worked, and pretty soon, they caught the website reporting on Glorbo, a completely nonsense invention that pretty quickly became a mascot. Then developers and even other game playerbases picked up the torch to bait and trap even more AI trash sites. How is Glorbo not real yet?!
