It may not be the $4 billion that ZeniMax was hoping for, but the studio still made out well today as a jury awarded it $500 million in damages for missteps on the part of Facebook and Oculus Rift as it developed the VR headset.
Following a two-week trial, the jury found Facebook and Oculus Rift innocent of stealing trade secrets but guilty of copyright infringement, false designation, and failing to comply with a non-disclosure agreement.
Oculus considers that it won the moral high ground and plans to file an appeal over the ruling: “The heart of this case was about whether Oculus stole ZeniMax’s trade secrets, and the jury found decisively in our favor. We’re obviously disappointed by a few other aspects of today’s verdict, but we are undeterred. Oculus products are built with Oculus technology.”
