Massively OP Podcast: Episode 7

The Massively OP Podcast crew learned many lessons from the MMO industry this week. We learned that players will get upset if you offer dolphins to some but not to all. We learned that VR is still a thing. We learned that the end of one MMO might mean the beginning of another. And we learned that sharing really is caring!

We also have a very special giveaway for podcast listeners, so tune in or read onward!

The giveaway!

As part of this week's promotion, we're giving away three cool gaming toys from our sponsor Newegg and its Rosewill store. Today's prize is aimed at our podcast listeners and is a Rosewill Apollo - RK-9100xR - Mechanical Keyboard with Red Backlight. It's an ergonomic keyboard with 50 macro keys, red backlighting, mechanical key switches, two USB 2.0 hubs, built-in headphone/microphone pass-through jacks, a detachable wrist rest, and extra gaming keys. Here's a pic:

For this giveaway, we'll be using Rafflecopter to count the entries for us. We reserve the right to change that up for future giveaways! You can earn entries in the giveaway by completing different steps in Rafflecopter; the question field is mandatory, but following us on Twitter and tweeting about this giveaway are optional and result in more entries. Rafflecopter uses javascript, so you'll need to enable it to see the entry widget below:

One winner selected at random from the total of entries submitted to Rafflecopter will be contacted via email by Massively Overpowered to receive this keyboard from Newegg. Entrants are subject to our official contest and giveaway rules and will be required to submit an affidavit of eligibility as well as a shipping address (obviously!). This particular contest is open only to residents of the 50 US states and Canada (excepting Quebec) because international law is mean.

Entries will be accepted from the moment this post goes live until the giveaway's end on Sunday, March 29, at 12:00 a.m. EDT (midnight Saturday night). We posted another giveaway for our readers yesterday; stream fans can enter a third giveaway on Wednesday's stream. Yay, three prizes! Good luck!

Other than the clicky clacky this keyboard makes when it is 4am, this keyboard is pretty nice so far :)

CrowingOne That song might be one of the most annoying things to ever have happened to people with my name :P On Steam I just go by "Stacy" and someone makes that reference in 1/3rd of my games. As far as things go on the internet though, that is pretty minor :)

breetoplay Muspel omedon666 I understand hat he's saying. My point is that the game that he wants is pretty clearly at odds with the game that THEY want to make.

It's debatable whether or not they're making the right decision, but their reasons for doing the things that they're doing are pretty clear and solve what would otherwise be very real problems.

Like I said, there's a point when you're looking at a game where you have to realize whether or not the game is aimed at you or not, and it's pretty clear that SCL is not supposed to cater to those that want a truly free-form group RP experience. It's going to be a lot more heavily structured than typical D&D.

Guys seriously about the guild wars 2 stuff:
A The stress test didn't have NDA https://www.guildwars2.com/en/news/upcoming-heart-of-thorns-closed-beta-tests/
B There will be a box and digital option. All of these you could have googled or searched from their site under 2 mins guys cmon check before you talk from your arse ^^
Q: Will this expansion only be available digitally, or will there be a boxed edition as well?
A: Both. Once Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns is available, you’ll be able to buy it digitally or get boxed editions at retail stores.
https://help.guildwars2.com/entries/105801626-General-Guild-Wars-2-Heart-of-Thorns-Questions
So yea just fixing those mess ups and yes the patch was buggy but mostly it is fixed now and it was not unplayable as the internet makes you believe thou the sounds were annoying.

Bree, that legal "MMO" you were playing didn't sound like much fun D; But I loved the sign off! That gave me a huge kick especially since the cut to the music was spot on with the attention span of most the nps.

breetoplay Muspel omedon666 That seems to be what I'm taking from this as well and I completely agree. As a player, I am more than willing to trust in my DM and as I have been known to do some things to test my limits. I would find it quite irritating if the DM were to be penalized for appropriate response to the risks I take. Beyond that, giving the option doesn't take anything away from the game, merely adds another set of people to find enjoyment from it.

Muspel omedon666 If I understood what Omedon was saying, the problem isn't that there will be rules for PUGS; it's that the same draconian rules will apply to non-PUGS or to people who are OK with taking a risk for a better reward. There needs to simply be a checkbox that says "Yes, I want to play a game where the rules are formal and the DM cannot grief me" and one that says "I'm willing to accept a potentially shitty GM in return for the chance at one who isn't hampered by a ruleset and who will make an awesome freeform game." Just let people pick their own level of risk. It's the Consensual PvP vs. not of tabletop. :P

Justin, on your problem with the GW2 camera, and how you are looking from belly-button height: have you checked the option box that aligns the camera height with your character's height? Not sure if you had tried that, but it may work

I really want that keyboard... I just bought a used blackwidow mechanical keyboard with an adjustable blue backlight because my old tri-color backlit keyboard croaked and I wanted to feel fancy; man do I miss the color red. Never blue, never again. Purple also hurts, don't buy purple backlit keyboards unless you freaken love purple and hate your eyes. Retina burn imminent.

btw the Elder Scrolls music at the beginning, uhnf. Made me long to return to ESO again. But not yet, not yet. Still needs time.

Neverwinter's Foundry is pretty cool, I've played around in there, had a bit of fun. Cryptic really has done some great stuff, along with some very average stuff (which makes it easy to forget about the great stuff). I hope their next project lives up to their greatest past accomplishments and isn't another overall mediocre experience for one reason or another (please don't be a mobile game, please don't be a mobile game). And it better involve super heroes.

omedon666 Muspel That's the thing, though-- if Sword Coast Adventures were primarily aimed at people who are looking to play private games with people that they know, then it wouldn't be a video game, it would just be a PC or mobile app that lets you play D&D online.

Instead, it's pretty clearly aimed at giving a D&D-esque experience to people by allowing those that don't have regular gaming groups to meet and play with strangers, and unfortunately, that means that there needs to be some kind of restrictions in place to mitigate griefing, like every single other multiplayer game in existence.

Look, I'm not saying that you have to approve of this direction or enjoy it, but you cannot fault them for implementing mechanics that specifically enable the type of game that they are trying to make.

Muspel

omedon666 Muspel It is an online game. There are always going to be more players and more griefers.

omedon666
Guest
omedon666

Muspel omedon666 *Headdesk* And Ideally... no one plays with them any more.  That's how D&D works.

Look, as I said in another comment around here, it's not too much to ask to have a seperate mode where those restraints are lifted, for reasons I lay out in said other post.  That's all I ask.  They're not entitled to my money, that's my condition.  The end.

Muspel
Guest
Muspel

omedon666 Muspel Except that they probably ARE necessary, because otherwise you get DMs who just grief the players nonstop.

omedon666
Guest
omedon666

Muspel omedon666 Sure, but the departures they're exhibiting now are unnecessary, and still hobble the potential of what they have here.  Remove the "Threat" system, give full, technically "abusable" but also empowering control to DMs in at least one mode, and the potential for this product multiplies by a lot.  There are, again, unnecessary things they're currently building into this game that fly in the face of some very important elements of D&D, elements that the current online gaming scene is starving for!

Muspel
Guest
Muspel

omedon666 Muspel Again, there's a difference between trying to emulate something in certain aspects, and trying to make it exactly the same. If their goal was to make Sword Coast adventures a faithful recreation of D&D, then it wouldn't look anything even remotely like what they've shown so far, since there are a lot of major departures from the dynamics of a tabletop session.

zoward omedon666

Here's hoping.  Apparently this is indeed ahot button topic on the forums (which I won't take the time to visit) where far more passionate DMs than I, who "get it" are making the case against the "threat" system.  I hope they listen.
What I'd like to see happen is to let them have their "PUGable DM" mode with all their restrictions as an option, one of many options among which I'd also like to see a free-form DM'able custom adventure mode, (there is indeed a dungeon building toolset in all this) even if it's session/dungeon based, that doesn't have the restrictions, and doesn't let characters used within it into the other mode (because that's presumably part of the issue: they don't want DMs handing out holy avengers to everyone and then going online and being "unfairly geared" in PUG groups... even though it's all co-operative objectives).  They can have their PUG-running "reward driven DMs" if I can have a tool set to seek my real reward: the privilege of DMing for friends, in our game, by our rules.  That's the only "reward" I care about.

omedon666  *Sigh*, it's a real bummer to read this.  I was hoping this game would be the next Neverwinter Nights.  Maybe they'll loosen the restrictions some time after release?

breetoplay omedon666 It's funny that we're having this conversation here, and simultaneously on the Shards Online community forums, there's a guy asking for hardcoded player non-admin "rights" to privacy and fairness amidst player admins/DMs, followed by a bunch of people (myself among him) shouting him down about how much he doesn't get it haha.
The reason PGC nerfs happen is because there are people that want things to always be super fair and balanced, and don't want "amateurs" killing them and hurting their street cred.  Those people should stay out of PGC... even though doing so is their loss.

omedon666
Guest
omedon666

Muspel omedon666 Actually a lot of their promos are pushing how "real D&D like" it is.  This isn't my extrapolation, it's my response to their hype.

Muspel

omedon666 I doubt that Sword Coast Legends is aimed at people looking for a "true D&D" experience. They certainly want to emulate some aspects of the game, but that's not the same thing.

omedon666
Guest
omedon666

breetoplay omedon666 When pressed on this issue, the SCL community people are adamant that it's an early conclusion to draw, but they also aren't denying the limitations they've mentioned.  We'll see what happens, but I won't touch it so long as it's a step back from a future in Shards Online or, currently, my tabletop game.

breetoplay

omedon666 I'm so sorry to hear this. I wish it weren't always what happens. But show me a PGC tool (other than housing), and I'll show you a dev team that nerfs it so much that it's hardly used at all, let alone to its potential. Why? Because they design with cheaters in mind instead of with a plan to simply ban said cheaters. It's not that simple, I know, but it makes me take my mods and retreat to solo games every time when I need that PGC fix.
And this isn't even the kind of game that has much else once no one's playing the PGC! I hope they get it sorted out.

About Guild Wars 2, I was already playing very little, but after the buggy patch I completely switched to Elder Scrolls Online. I don't even login for the daily reward anymore... The game feels abandoned. It's the first time I see such a failed patch from ArenaNet. Please do find out more!

So listened to podcast and entertaining as usual, really makes me look forward to a Tuesday :-)
FFXI is a true cross platform game and when the console versions shut down those players will be able to continue on the PC version on the same account / characters (assuming they have a suitable PC) if they so desire.  I know I went from the 360 version onto the PC after my console suffered the red ringed of death (yet again).  They will have to buy the PC version though but its dirt cheap these days so shouldn't be too harsh.

My big complaint with Sword Coast Legends, from what I've heard of its DM capabilities, is that they're streamlining it to make it "fair," and overkilling that in a way that seriously hampers DM freedoms in situations where the players in real D&D don't mind the DM having them.

Cases in point:
1) The DM cannot hand out specific loot.  Don't bother writing the quest for the sword of the king, you can't give them the sword.
2) The DM is limited in the challenges they can lay out by the "threat" system, which "rewards" the DM for "challenging but not killing" the players.  The DM can't go easy on them or he gets less rewards, the DM can't kill them or he loses threat/rewards.  True D&D sometimes requires killing people, sometimes requires going easy on them.
Both of these points are, sadly, clearly leading toward a game meant to box in "PUG DMs" because "the internet is full of jerks and we need to protect you from them." This would be lovely for an MMO where you're not empowering DMs that players might themselves choose out of *GASP* trust,, but they are doing just that.  Sure, maybe there's a PUG'ed system for 'find me a DM," and yes, these sbarriers work for that, but so far as I've seen, there is no mode for a DM and his buddies playing this game, where the players trust their DM not to kill them all for no reason, thus allowing the DM to give them loot and balance the encounters as he sees fit.
True D&D is a life simulator.  Sometimes life isn't fair.  That's why good, trustworthy DMs are rare, as the ability to present that realism and make it fun is a talent, not a program that can be thrust on all DMs, trusted or not.
In the spirit of true D&D, "jerk DMs" are policed by empty sessions and the jerk eating all his doritos by himself.  The game shouldn't be applying such stringent rules on the DM because "some may be bad," at least not in a mode disconnected from the open public.

Regarding FFXI potentially dropping the scubscription with maintenance mode: Despite Justin's reasonable assumption... this is not the impression I got, and really is the only hole in my previous "why are you complaining, they're leaving the game up" argument, really.  I haven't scoured the articles involved, but I did not get the feeling that the sub was ending.
