Betawatch: August 28th, 2015

Let's make this happen.

Project Gorgon‘s latest run on Kickstarter is over, and it was a pretty big success for the title, hitting almost $75,000 in funding. That means the game is moving forward with improvements, and it also means that players are going to need to start paying money to get into the test client. Hey, it had to happen eventually.

So what other beta news do we have before this weekend’s convention?

Plus we’ve got our usual list of games just past the break. Did we miss something? Is another game further along than we know? Let us know down in Ye Olde Commente Sectionne.

As always, we consider an MMO to be in open testing if it features free, public signups and will server wipe prior to launch. An MMO is marked in closed testing if it’s running a private test phase that cannot freely be accessed by the general public; it’s usually under NDA as well. Early access and crowdfunded MMOs whose tests we deem legitimate will be included. So-called “open beta” soft-launch MMOs with cash shops, no sign of launch in the west, or limited interest for our readers will not be listed.

The explorable area is of decent size, but it can easily be seen where the points for further expansion are. The concept of each ‘city’ are similar to what Pirates of the Burning Sea did. It’s basically just a way of turning a drop down menu into a more interative/immersive experience.
I would say that if the PU launches with each landing area being this size, most will be happy.
The ship in the pic is in an area that technically is not open yet. There are two landing pads that are basically eye candy that can be glitched through to if you are persistent enough. The ships in each are not fully rendered and do not have full collision detection.

Yeah still not a fan of how landings will work. It was one thing to have to occasionally wait a little extra time to be docked in Freelancer. This is a guaranteed bunch of minutes seeing something that I will no doubt have to see o we and over again with little if an significant difference.
I see them either shortening the landing sequence or find someway to start offering the ability to get your missions from space. And the latter would totally ruin the whole point of having the landing zone but I would put money on it happening once alpha PU play starts.

It looks alright but I don’t know if I want to put up with an automated 5 minute canyon tour everytime I want to land, that will get old really fast.

I’m curious how much of that city can you explore? Can you get to
anything beyond the spaceship in the foreground? Can you get to / get
inside that spaceship?

I hope they put as much work into the social module as they do into the other parts of the game , I’m a person not a spaceship so I want my character to look great like the rest of the game .

Also, you can win yourself a copy of Ark by playing it during this free weekend. I won a copy in a few hours of play when it started last night. The details are out there somewhere.
Now I don’t have to regret spending money on yet another Early Access survival game, but I can still play it :P

FYI, the “bowling ball dino” (aka doedicurus aka armadillo) arrived earlier this week in ARK, and the mesopithecus (a monkey that rides on your shoulder) released today.
