The Daily Grind: Give a shout-out to your favorite retired MMO characters

52

We all have them: MMO characters we invested time, love, and no small amount of effort in making them all they could be… after which we put them in mothballs as we moved on to a new game or alt.

They’re our fleet of retired characters, each one of them either sitting patiently at a selection screen somewhere or having been long since obliterated. Each of them meant something to us once upon a time. So today I’m asking you to give a shout-out to your favorite retired characters and a fact or memory about each.

I’ll always remember Syp, my madcap Asuran Engineer in Guild Wars 2 who toasted the entire landscape with her awesome flamethrower. She suffered many jumping puzzles in the pursuit of finding new places to burn, and I hope she enjoys retirement.

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!

Well my namesake here from City of Heroes, an Ice/Ice Tanker.  Also Lady Kitsune who I ran a lot near the end.  She was a Illusion/Kinetic Controller.
Now I’m sad.

Sham, elemental shaman on Warsong US server. My first MMO character. Was king of duels for a long time and well known in WoW community due to pvp movie released. Fun times.

My very first MMO character, Sade, back in ragnarok online. I remade her on several servers, but I had a heck of a time playing her. Made lots of friends, did some cool stuff, explored a lot. I also made a lot of mistakes, and did some very rude things I wasnt aware of back then (like when I thought it was funny sniping to claim monsters while this melee guy was walking towards them. Dunno why I was doing it, I wasnt trying to be a jerk, but one day I hunted him down to apologise after I realised and then we went on an MVP hunt together)

There’s also Dijana from FFXI. I played her longer than any other character in any other mmo. Had a lot of adventures, made friends, even fell in love as her and ended up getting married IRL as a result from that. I did end up recreating her in FFXIV, and for a while she looked the same, but since I’ve changed to au ra instead of human now, and her physical appearance is completely different, and I view her character’s personality completely different, Im not sure she’s really the same character anymore. I’m hoping for the day XIV brings out the dancer class, since that’s what Dijana in XI was

Mosselyn, my resto druid in WoW, was my first MMO character ever. I created her in 2005 or 2006. She was my main for several years, and I loved her to death. We learned “how to dungeon” together, and I discovered how much I enjoy healing. I even stubbornly leveled her as resto, back when “healing power” was not the same thing as “spellpower”.
Then Blizz started overhauling class skills every time they sneezed, and she morphed into a complete stranger. She’s still there when I occasionally go back to WoW, but I can barely stand to play her now. It kinda killed WoW for me, and I still grieve a little for her in the dark reaches of my gamer soul.

My first main character in my first mmo. *sigh* my rougue. she did a lot of special things and I love remembering her. I hope she isn’t deleted yet.

And my GW2 thief. She’s special as well albeit different. Only reason I log into gw2 from time to time. Just standing somewhere or jumping around for some minutes and thinking of the time when I had fun playing this toon.
