Guild Wars 2’s guild hall arena is ‘a combat sandbox’

Guild Wars 2’s week of dev blogs continues, this time with an update about guild hall arenas. ArenaNet calls its new guild hall arena a “combat sandbox,” and today’s dev blog is designed to give you an overview of the tools at your disposal when entering the arena.

Initially your guild arena will start with two teams, but a third can be unlocked via an upgrade. Upgrading will also cause an Arena Obstacles Coordinator NPC to appear. Talking to said NPC will basically turn you into a decorator, with the added bonus of being able to manipulate obstacles even while your guildmates are duking it out in the arena. Unfortunately, you can’t use normal guild hall decorations in the arena, nor can you use arena obstacles as decorations outside of the arena platform.

You have control over your arena and can create different game modes?
In the same way that Counter Strike had a billion time the creativity of all those recent gankboxes put together.

How this is even remotely “sandbox”?

I’ll make my own little house at the end of my jumping puzzle.

As long as the jumping puzzles are closer to the ‘better’ Wildstar ones than the 100’s of trash ones that were on every other housing plot.  Seriously peps, get your stuff together when it comes to design or stop doing it! ;P

All I can think about is the crazy ammount of custom jumping puzzles everyone’s gonna make with decorations. I can’t wait, only a few days left til launch!

This is a pretty neato feature. Even a constrained sandbox is more than a lot of other games are offering.
