Black Desert Online confirms early 2016 launch with buy-to-play model

The race for 2016 is officially on.

Daum Games confirmed this week that Black Desert Online will be coming out in North America and Europe in early 2016. This Black Desert will be significantly different than the existing Russian and Korean versions, including its business model, which will be buy-to-play with an in-game cash shop.

Daum Games Project Manager Daniel Loehr indicated that much is being done to adapt the game to the western market: “We are putting a lot of effort in the game’s Western localization. We are localizing approximate 2.5 million words into English, German, and French. Black Desert Online’s content and gameplay sytems will be adjusted to accommodate Western players and our differentiating business model.”

Black Desert launched a teaser site and new trailer to mark the occasion, the latter of which you can watch after the break.

As far as i remember EVERYTHING is in the cashshop in korean version. want your character to have better looking gear than what you start in ? cashshop, and only cashshop. If it’s B2P the better have put all that stuff inside the actual game. The korean version is basically a cashshop build on top of a hollow game.

Gottphoenix AlexanderDeLarge Perfect Hero GW2 has it exactly the way it should be. Useful account upgrades, convenience items, and cosmetic items in the cash shop. Gems tradable for ingame gold and vice versa. Nothing that can’t be obtained though ingame means.

The way I see it they need to make money to keep developing content at a good pace otherwise you get a game that struggles to produce any new content at a reasonable pace. What I dislike are games which impose lame limitations on f2p players, hello SWOTR with your credit cap, no raids and limits on group content, or other games which deny access to game systems unless you sub.

AlexanderDeLarge Perfect Hero So basically it’s f2p that’s not free.

Gottphoenix This is my worry, a B2P game with F2P content.
Still, i’ll give them the benefit of the doubt for now.

b2p is good if you get the stuff you usually would (like full bank, inventory and character slots). It’s not so good if the cash shop is equivalent to a f2p game and the only difference is barrier to entry for spammers.

AlexanderDeLarge Perfect Hero there is nothing less intrusive about the business model of guild wars 2. You still have to unlock bag slots, character slots, bank slots etc from the shop.

II see the B2P model as a plus for the game. Hopefully it was chosen so they could  sufficiently budget decent localization efforts.
The game’s PvP focus and non-raid oriented PvE content might not be for everyone but frankly I think that’s great.   Too many MMOs in the past have tried to do everything and just ended up doing everything poorly.  I think the genre would be better served if we see more variety of games exploring different styles of gameplay.
I am still interested in seeing how this game turns out but that freaking camera blur/shake is still incredibly annoying.  They even use it for their bloody ‘Coming Soon’ text.  /rollseyes  It’s-not-that-cool for pity’s sake.  Maybe this is just a trend in Korean, like overdone bloom effects in Korean games were a few years ago.

ohforfs Sounds like it’s going to be casual PvE (no endgame raids) with PvP intended as the endgame.

If I am right about that, it’s an interesting combination and sounds like something that I could find entertaining though others might not.
