Blizzard discusses the failings of the Sombra ARG for Overwatch

Everyone expects

The ARG surrounding Sombra’s reveal in Overwatch was a bit dicey, even if you overlook stuff like players hacking other player accounts out of certainty that this was part of the game. (Note: It will never be part of the game.) After all of the hard work to uncover her, she was just revealed at BlizzCon, rather than through any effort on the part of the community. Blizzard’s team has taken the criticism in stride, something lead hero designer Geoff Goodman stated as almost inevitable: “I think it was fair, the feedback. We’re not very good at ARGs. We’ve never done one before.”

While revealing Sombra at BlizzCon was apparently always the plan, the point of the ARG was to give more insight into Sombra as a character and help players get a feel for the hacker. That doesn’t mean that future reveals will also have an associated ARG, but neither does it mean that they won’t; it’s a tool, and this was the first attempt at deploying it. It remains to be seen if future iterations are attempted and whether or not they’re received more positively.

Meanwhile, if you need a bit of a humor lift today, you can check out the video of Lucio’s voice actor Jonny Cruz joking around with fellow Overwatch voice actors just below.
