NCsoft has rebooted Lineage Eternal as Project TL in Unreal 4

Remember Lineage Eternal? It seems as if we’ve been watching the gorgeous MMOARPG sequel to the Lineage franchise for half of forever, as NCsoft has moved it into and out of testing over the last several years, finally admitting last summer that it was gutting the game and starting over with Unreal 4 following the replacement of the team lead. Maybe the more upsetting news at the time was the rumor that it was switching from MMOARPG to just another mobile title.

And now we know just a little bit more: Lineage Eternal is now being called Project TL (“The Lineage”) and is indeed a do-over using the U4 engine, although as MMO Culture points out, plenty of other assets and the entire character system has been replaced with a more MMORPG-like customization mechanic, which is great news! It doesn’t sound like a mobile MMO as rumored, as NCsoft is hinting at consoles. Closed beta is expected next year. The trailer is down below!

Seeing as Lost Ark is stuck in feature creep and has no NA/EU release confirmation, then this seems like our next ARPG to look forward to. Looks promising, but I’ll keep my money on hold until it’s out.

agemyth ?

Looks like a bunch of pretty scripted events and cutscenes. That doesn’t do anything for me in a trailer for an MMO, but hey it is pretty.

If we go by the last scene it looks like things won’t be gender locked either. The 5 classes seem to be (just my own generic names) Warrior, Mage, Cleric, Archer, Rogue.

On the last scene we see a female archer and male cleric on one side and on the other we see a male archer and female Cleric on the other. Also something to note is the male warrior on one side was using a sword and shield and on the other it looked like he was using a heavy mace or battle axe. So perhaps advanced classes or multiple weapons/builds. All speculation of course off of a single teaser trailer, but speculation is fun sometimes.

Wait, wait, wait…

So, the footage we are seeing, the sequences that seem to be game play, they are using the Unreal 4 engine?

And that seamless transition between what looks like isometric combat to action combat and vice versa that is a feature included as part of this engine upgrade?

Well, shut my mouth after you fill me up with whiskey!!! (an old saying around these parts which means impressive. Have to translate for you Yankees and Canadians.)

That is one hell of teaser clip there. Wow. That BnS II teaser that was posted earlier today should take a lesson.

Everything is possible in UE4, what matters is how you use it.

I see the female armor has boob windows, which is the most important part of a combat outfit.

Oh well, still seems cool, will continue to keep an eye out for.

Lol. Well, I’ve seen a few boob windows now in BnS. This one? Pretty standard fare for a game of this ilk these days. Distraction is the better part of protection, or something like that.

Very impressive! So, BD as self-proclaimed “best graphics” game should be worried :))

Wait…one can switch between isometric to 3rd person 3D views effortlessly with this MMO? Can such a beast exist? O.o

Had to watch it twice to make sure. Is it possible? Action combat and Iso combat combined? It would make the wait worthwhile at the very least.

My pigtails have been thinking about that…

“Oh-ooh! Better watch out….this is about to get convoluted everyone!”

…and how that would with WASD keys. I supposed they could patch in a default hot key that give you viewing options. Or while in combat, you go strait into isometric mode. Either will likely work, I guess. o.O

Sure. and it would make for some interesting game play.

Edit/Erratum: …and how that would *work with WASD keys…proper.

I played L 2 for a good 3 years. Grinder best describes that one. Lineage Eternal has been existence for how long now? Yep, too long. Now, for me, I’m pretty well done with the Korean mmo juggernauts. They put mmo’s out like Hanes churns out socks.

Granted Lineage has been in the top five rated games in Asia for a very long time. I bow to that, but nothing else out there is worth a dime compared to some of the West’s older mmo’s. Thus for the remainder of my time as an mmo hobbyist, I shall pull for the Western version mmo. Surely, someday we’ll see one that finally clicks with most of us!

MMORPG, to me still needs that feeling of getting into character and wanting to log on each to sort of tell your own story as it reelates to grander lore. I like this video; https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aJCEQaSlvHE&t=28s

this has got to be the worst dev hell project i’ve ever seen. it’s a shame too becuase that gameplay footage back in 2010 looked pretty fun and would’ve got in on the ground floor of the ARPG revival.

now i feel it’s too little too late for this title. and i’m not sure the lineage legacy’s good will can save it in the west (or even in korea).
