Trion Worlds says it has no plans to bring RIFT to console

With MMOs such as Trove and Defiance already inhabiting both the PC and console space, it seems not unreasonable to wonder if Trion Worlds has any plans on growing RIFT’s audience by bringing that title to PlayStation 4 or Xbox One.

Unfortunately, the answer to this line of questioning is “no.”

“We have no current plans to move RIFT to console,” the studio said on Twitter. “It would be a herculean effort.”

While that seems to be a pretty firm closed door in that direction, at least RIFT has enjoyed a burst of popularity through its new Prime progression server. Speaking of Prime, the team announced that it will be increasing the rather meager quest XP rewards on the progression server with this Wednesday’s update.

it would be a total disaster they can’t even get their shit together as it is lol

Honestly why would they…? RIFT hasn’t aged well at all, in my honest opinion. The Soul system is too complex/convoluted to properly accommodate console users without massively overhauling the game’s systems.

Maybe if they do a RIFT 2 or something then sure, I could see consoles if they design for such… but yeah. Don’t see how they would even want to think or deal with that on a console.

Also haha “No current plans” for a mmo company so often translates to “We can’t tell you yet, but we’ll bother to answer the question so we can see people’s responses to the idea”

Duh. What I want to know is 1)If Trion is considering a RIFT 2, or to leave the brand at this game? And more importantly 2)Is RIFT going to get substantial content support from now on, or is it up to a decreasing trickle of updates and reliance on Prime/alternate server rulesets?

i haven’t even needed any macros and don’t have my 2nd bar bound (yet). which incidentally i hav to click my aoe spell because i’m not going to waste a first bound bar slot on it LOL.

LOL

Yeah, I have my clicking bar for the level 50 mage on old RIFT.

I was thinking of the Chloromancer build that I like being applicable to a console at max level. No way.

They would have to go SWL with this game to make it play on console, then you might as well build a new game.

Would have to cull some abilities or make them mappable.

afaict based on vague memories they’ve definitely culled spells at some point already.

pretty sure i had more aoe spells on my rogue at this level with similar souls.

Yeah, souls have undergone quite a few changes over the last couple of years.

They would have to do MASSIVE ability pruning. The main reason they have not done ability pruning in Rift is due to how the macros work. You can tie 10 abilities to 1 button if you want. This is not what they will tell you though. My guess is that it has less to do with that and more to do with them being unable to afford to make a console version of a game that might have virtually no appeal whatsoever to console gamers. One could argue it has very little appeal to PC gamers as well, hence the desperate attempt at a quick cash grab with the progression server idea before it inevitably shuts down.

It doesn’t even look good on PC

it looks suprisingly ok when maxxxed out for a 2011 mmo.

ofc by default it sets itself ot minimum graphics settings which is unexpected in this day and age of auto detection and setting at high even on fairly low end (modern) hardware but ehhhh

addition: don’t get me wrong i don’t care for the grimdark/drab colour pallettes of the zones. i don’t remember being as depressing aesthetic wise as i am experiencing while questing back in teh day. as it is the stand out zones for being that terrible mix of dark green/grey/browns back in the day were endgame zones, but i definitely feel the closing in depressed colour palettes of the 5 zones i’ve been in so far.

DK, I think it looks nice on the upper settings myself.

My video card is average and CPU is 6 years old, it runs smooth on the main server and looks great.

The PRIME server is still a little clunky.

the extures and polys on the ground in that screenshot stand out as not being great but there are newer mmo games with similar or worse that are considered “prettty” or “gorgeous”.

the exp thing is funny. in that their stated intent was to make it more like vanilla/launch. and yet by virtue of making rifts adn invasions worthwhile and questing gimped, they literally made it the opposite of launch when rifts and invasions were a waste of time for leveling and every invasion saw dozens of players afking at relative safe spots for the duration there of.

anyways should it surprise anyone that nerfing exp from the live version where they sell exp/etc pots to make leveling process livable ending up not working out particularly well when those exp pots and alternate leveling mechanisms they’ve added over the years are removed?

in any case my more immidiate concern is the excessive server lag causign ability delay/unresponsiveness from relaitlvey minor to extreme. but i’ve foound a silver lining – whenever i’m doing group content i can always take a minibreak to take a bite of my snack or a sip of my drinking mid pull without arousing suspicion because my group mates will clearly assume that it’s just lag that is causing my ability animations to not be firing off and not the fact that i am slacking off on dpsing the boss. XD

Yeah the leveling in Rift is pretty painful past 50 after they released the first expansion. To be fair though, the first expansion came out pre-f2p and it still felt really slow. The problem is that they never nerfed the exp gain and made all expansions just as slow to level in. It is pretty much mandatory that you buy exp potions to level reasonably quick now.

They learned how to make a good design for a game from WoW, why didn’t they learn that previous expansions need shorter leveling curves when new expansions come out?

i remember storm legion pushing alot of peoplethat kept playing through vanilla out of the game becuase of how awful the leveling was in it.

anyways this primarily applies to the vanilla content that is unlocked currently in prime. which prime is more of an accelerated progression server than classic server to begin with. iirc they were supposed to unlock the first raid dungeon this week but no one who has even leveled super hardcore can hit level 50 with the exp rates being what they are lol.

Reader

“iirc they were supposed to unlock the first raid dungeon this week ” Source? I never heard this. Obviously Greenscale’s Blight (and the Death/Life Sagas, and hopefully Chronicles sooner than later) is coming soon, but I had no more info than that.

i thought i read it was planned to be unliked 2 weeks in a while back. no source unless i go looking but may have very much misread or misunderstood.

and searching seems i misread. still it is supposed ot be an accelerated progression server that lasts a year.

Reader
Malcolm Swoboda

At least a year. Its unlikely they take only 3 months per version, I think. That’s potentially average of less than a month per raid tier.

they also said it’s participation based and if a large chunk of the population drops out because of the exp rate pain then it won’t even last a year before it’s a ghost town.

Reader
Malcolm Swoboda

All these games are participation based to an extent. They said its a year but it depends on participation whether to keep it up or end it – its not set in stone but they’re presuming for the latter. Right now their tech is being strained from *too much* activity.

>Right now their tech is being strained from *too much* activity.

i realized that prime is vastly more populated than live but it’s a far cry from single server populations/crowds at launch, which is why people are right to complain about the server lag.

there’s also the fact that all day and night is complaints about lag and the exp issues for the past 4-7 days++++ and people aren’t going to stick around en masse for long if trino doesn’t solve them post haste.

Reader
Malcolm Swoboda

I just don’t know what this has to do with their announced timeframe.

sorry about that. they made the participation based statement a clear qualifier/disqualifer. as in they plan to do prime for at least year BUT it’s participation based (i think that’s nearly a direct quote).

so one would assume that on their “accelerated progression server” they would accelerate progression faster than it was originally. which the first year of rift vanilla saw the first several raids more quickly than is currently the case on prime

as it is, at this point of rift vanilla being prime i believe GSB was already cleared for the first time before it was buffed, if not also the 1st time after the buff.

Reader
Malcolm Swoboda

Ah ok. I don’t have a problem with no raids being released in the first few weeks. I do think the XP tuning is poor.

I’m still enjoying Rift. A lot. Although I agree that they need to tweak the experience by more than small increments. Slowly they’re getting there, but it’s a little frustrating to do content over and over again when I just want to move on, but have fallen behind a zone’s level by several levels.

I haven’t experienced the lag some people talk about. I wonder if it’s a handshaking problem between some ISPs to the game’s servers, thus not affecting everyone.

it’s trion’s servers/data center and trino says everyone has it so yeah. even sundial in texas in the same city as their data center has it badly.
