Star Trek Online sets Deep Space Nine Victory is Life expansion for June 5 as players grumble over newest faction
Star Trek Online has officially put a launch date on its Deep Space Nine-based expansion, Victory is Life: June 5th, at least for PC.

“The Deep Space Nine-themed update takes Captains on a maiden journey to the Gamma Quadrant, where they team up with crew members from DS9 to battle the Hur’q. This includes Quark (Armin Shimerman), Odo (René Auberjonois), Kira (Nana Visitor), Doctor Bashir (Alexander Siddig) and eight other characters voiced by the original cast members. The expansion also introduces a brand new Jem’Hadar playable faction, increased level cap, seven new episodes, an all-new Gamma Quadrant Sector Battlezone and other gameplay features.”

Meanwhile, as technically Star Trek Online is adding a new playable faction as part of the expansion, you should probably temper your expectations. You should temper them quite a lot. As players are discovering while they explore the test servers, there’s not a whole lot of original content for the Jem’Hadar faction.

In fact, there is only a single Jem’Hadar-specific mission before faction players will have to make a choice to join up with the Klingons or Federation and go through all of that content. It was also noted that the race itself has limited customization options, no racial hub, no female characters, and only one starship.

“I don’t mind that they’re a small f(r)action that start at 60, but the way they are implemented seems… lazy? Rushed? Bare minimum,” one poster said on Reddit. “The JH only have one unique mission (without intro movie) that ends up with them picking either the FED or the KDF as allies. Out of the blue, without reason.”

If players do want to secure a couple more options for their Jem’Hadar characters, they can go ahead and pre-order the Gamma Vanguard pack from the store. Cryptic’s sweetened up this pack with the addition of an EVA suit and three Jem’Hadar bridge officers.

I wouldn’t even say the Jem’hadar have males. They’re an engineered species created to be aggressive killers dependent on a drug and mentally loyal to the Changlings (the leaders of the Dominion).

I find it weird that they’re even playable. While there are Jem’hadar who are sympathetic to Federation (or very least hostile to the Dominion), that’s an abnormality.

Look a new lockbox with a little dribble of new content, that just about sums up the game really.

Underwhelming… Lazy…. Rushed….. ahh if only it were the FIRST time I had heard these words in relation to Craptic.

This has always been my problem with STO. Lack of real end game content. The game is a blast getting to 60 but after that you waiting for a new episode or expansion. Grinding rep.is not real end game content. And running foundry missions gets boring fast. Its like once they added the foundry they leave it up to the player base to create content.

At long last they are also adding Cardassian Captains.

In many ways offering more as they have both male and female, though a little over looked in the promotional material. But I’m looking forward to it.

My only focus will be the 60-65 treadmill and the goodies that come with it and the Mk XV upgrade grind. A free T5 ship + T5-U token will be nice to play around with or to at least park some gear on LOL.

Disappointing, but not surprising. I’ll use my saved up stipend to grab the carrier and mess around with it but I was really hoping for a beefy expansion after they teased it last year. Oh well.

2 totally different games. The only game they need to avoid is WOW expansion. (and that needs to be avoided by all other MMOs lol…)

Its a joke of an expansion. But still, it may be the best ever and the players love it. Seriously though, it breaks my heart a little to see the game slowly circling the drain. A DS9 themed expansion had such incredible potential and it’s being squandered here.

You want to talk squandered expansion? For the TOS “Agents of Yessterday”; they made a functional 23c Quadrant map that is really nice and could be made more functional; but you only get 6 missions before you’re forced to the 25th century and you can never go back to even visit the 23c version of ESD or it’s vendors that have certain items you can ONLY get from them.

“Victory is Life” seems to follow that format to a virtual Tee. The last large Expansion STTO had was the ST: VOY themed “Delta Rising”; and the one STO Lead content Dev Al Rivera claimed: “…Is the best STO expansion ever; and the Players love it…” <— Not surprisingly Mr. Rivera stated his favorite ST franchise series was ST:VOY (His least favorite is TOS – so yeah, we TOS fans weren't surprised Mr. Rivera skimmed on it) – but I guess theat Cryptic Upper management felt large and full Expansions like “Legacy of Romulus” and the aforementioned “Delta Rising” didn’t have a good overall return of investment (yes, they made money; but I get the feeling after “Agents of Yesterday” the Cryptic suits feel they can get just about the same or better overall ROI with less actual investment in time/money now that they have both a PC and a Console version; and so small expansions like Agents of Yesterday and the upcoming “Victory Is Life” will be the paradigm for future STO Expansions (if any because they’ve pretty much covered the existing franchise unless they decide to do an ENT or ST: Discovery themed expansion in the future.

Again, considering Al Rivera is still one of their Lead Content Devs, and he’s stated on numerous occasions that STO has (in his opinion) “Too much content…”; it’s not surprising that after he finished the Expansion based on his favorite Star Trek series (to mixed reviews as his: ” Delta Rising is the best STO expansion ever; and the Players love it…” has been lampooned by the playerbase ever since; and after saying that Cryptic basically stopped him from doing interviews about STO for game sites and STO podcasts – and had other Devs who were less prone to aggressively putting their foot in their mouths like Mr. Rivera has over the years.

Still. free is free, and it is new content and the DS9 Station model and interiors get a much needed/welcome revision and update; so it’s probably better just to focus on and take the good stuff the Expansion gives the game.

I don’t need all that explained to me. I am well aware. I was there and have been since before LoR. That’s why I said “It may be the best and the players will love it”.

Al Rivera has killed this game. Before Delta rising the game thrived and even had queues. People had lots of alts they played and enjoyed. Even if 25 dollar ships were a tough pill to swallow. People were happy to support the game. Then delta rising came and changed the game for the worst and had loads of bugs and massive grind increase in a game that people can have near 55 characters. They also banned people for leveling 17 times faster than intended cos they didn’t Q&A.

Then decided that since people weren’t login on (because they quit because of broken queues and grind) that new holiday ships would be exclusive to their year to force people to log in or miss out. People hated this but he didn’t give a fuck. Ship sales plummeted further so they came up with admiralty to get people to buy the big packs instead of single ships because now buying packs would be more cost efficient to increase your admiralty game. Anti consumer practices continue, no discount if you got an item from the pack, tons of these packs have ships that require fleet modules for their final form which cost money.

The dilex climbed as the whales left the game, this was further pushed by the fact that cryptic forgot to make a fleet holding for like 2 years thus people had nothing to spend dil on. Their solutions? Nerf foundry so it gave less dil and nerf contraband further alienating the casual base. When that didn’t work he took the holiday ships people want and put them in a lockbox that requires dil. A bandaid to fix the dil-zen problem that was 496:1. To nobodies surprise the odds were terrible but the insult to injury was that they weren’t account wide like their counterparts given at the events. They could have made them account wide but he chose not to. From cryptic themselves:

So what’s next? Let’s nerf all the investment everybody has spent on since derpa rising. Plasmonic leeches that were 90-100m back in the day? nerfed. attrition warfare 2? nerfed. Just about anything? nerfed. Paired with a queue UI redesign that kicks you randomly for no reason but that it can. Now without plasma consoles to help people out costs of things are going out of control again since everybody needs to fill 8 slots instead of 2-5 they needed to fill before with universal consoles as most builds depended on plasma cutting down costs.

Vil literally has like no content. A battlezone with 3 miniqueues, 1 queue, 6 or 7 episodes that aren’t even fully voiced. Why is loriss the sexiest vorta without a voice? admiral quinn the main fed contact? no voice. I rather they just go full voiceless and get more content than them blowing 95% of the budget in expensive actors. We all would love to hear patrick stewart in the game but it isn’t worth the expense of having another expansion being hyped for like a year then give so little.
Things are so bad that cryptic doesn’t even have staff to update their mvp scam the phoenix box with newer items.

from the ambassador’s hand.

Only reasons the game has survived so long is because it is star trek and that there is no other similar game with it’s ship combat. I’ve tried looking for alternatives but if I want ships in an mmo, all paths lead back to sto. Marvel heroes wasn’t so lucky after their nerfed everyone, look where they are now. But they had path of exile and MU as competition. Cryptic better wise up before somebody makes a pve game with ships that dethrones them. Because it is easy to rule when there is no contenders.
