Final Fantasy XIV celebrates five years of community ahead of its newest fan festival

It’s only a few days until the newest Final Fantasy XIV fan festival kicks off in Las Vegas, so you would imagine that the team would do nothing but be talking up sizzle about the event, right? And you could argue that’s what the latest video is about… except only in a roundabout way. It’s not about pounding music or teases at reveals. It’s about the community that’s formed around the game after five years of operation.

And it’s not about crowd shots or simply stats (although stats are in there for those who enjoy them); it’s about fan favorites, about Haurchefant cosplayers pantomiming death animations, about fanart of important NPCs as Namazu, and about friendships and bonds formed in the game carried out of the game. In short, it’s a celebration of the community behind the game that pretty much even brief players talk up. Check out the whole video just below to get a sense of what that means.

I wrote something here: but man it doesn’t feel like its been that long. I remember people cackling in youtube videos about “final fantasy 4.0” after 1.0’s train wreck and assuming like the ‘decade of lightning’ it was another sign the new “we must exploit this brand in all possible venues” CEO that took over during late 6th gen had just lead to the ruination of my favourite childhood brand.

Then i tried that PS3 beta and queue for the stump MSW in South Shroud aside it sold me and after ten years of WoW i just swapped main mmo’s and never regretted it. Amazing community, the best OST in the business and the whole job system with a crafting system like XIV’s was everything i wanted from an mmorpg.

Now lets just hope the Diadem/Eureka idea dies with Stormblood and we can really get excited for the next 5! :p

Happy Birthday FFXIV.
As a latecomer to your game, I’d played nearly everything else before I stumbled onto your world. I’ve just finally crossed that great endurance grind that’s the lvl 50 msqs on my 1st job, and I’m enjoying it immensely. So much stuff to do, so much to explore, really, it’s a terrific game.
You’re not free to play (past lvl 30) but I have to say I’m perfectly fine paying $15/mo to have a whole, complete game at my fingertips.

Thank you. I’m looking forward to spending a lot of time in Eorzea.

Glad you’ve been enjoying your time in Eorzea. That infamous grind during the 2.x patches really is all about endurance in a lot of ways. Though what lies beyond is well worth it, in my opinion.

Hope you enjoy your trek through Heavensward and Stormblood areas. As the topic alluded to, there is a free Final Fantasy Festival stream coming up soon where they will likely announce their next expansion, and have a live letter detailing patch 4.5 that’s to come in a couple months. It used to be pay per view (the festival), but they decided to make it free to everyone. There are three of them each year, it seems. Focused entirely on FFXIV and taking place in Japan, United States and Europe so that fans have a better chance of going in person.

Though people were upset this year since they sold out so quickly for the Vegas one. At least the stream is free this year, though!

That was a nice video. Probably would have gone by without me knowing if not for the mention. Thank you.
