Guild Wars 2’s next living story episode will not make 2018, but Wintersday is live today

If for some reason you still thought there was a chance that ArenaNet could push out Guild Wars 2’s next living story episode today or this week… well, I suppose it might have been possible, but it’s seemed unlikely for at least a month, given the timing of the balance patch and Wintersday. Anyway, you can stop wondering, as GW2’s Mike Z has confirmed it’s not happening until after the new year.

“As some of you already have put together, Episode 5 will not be released this year. As the episode was coming together and we started to plot out its release, we had to make a tough call regarding its ship date, for reasons that have to do both with other in-game content and with the way we treat our teams,” he writes. “As the calendar year winds down, we want to enjoy the revelry of the Wintersday holiday with you while also ensuring that team members can spend the holidays relaxing with their family and friends. We’ll soon be able to share details of what is to come, so stay tuned.”

It’s not all bad news, however, as Wintersday is live today as planned, with the jumping puzzle, mount raxes, the Toypocalypse, and Tixx’s Infinirarium.

“Snowballs, candy canes and presents can only mean one thing…the holiday season has officially arrived in Tyria as the Guild Wars 2 universe kicks off its annual in-game event, Wintersday, today! ArenaNet invites you and your readers to join the celebration of this long-standing and beloved holiday tradition now through Jan. 2nd. This year, players will be able to enjoy some new surprises, including ice castle-themed guild hall decoration pieces and the ‘Secret Lair of the Snowmen,’ a 10-player instance with unique rewards, including Wintergreen-themed weapons. There will also be new additions to the set of candy cane themed weaponry, several new minipets, rare items from the Wintersday gift boxes and new meta-achievements.”
