The Daily Grind: Will you kickstart any MMOs in 2019?

80

Last year, I realized that I hadn’t backed any video games. I didn’t back any this year either. Oh, sure, some of the games I backed ages ago, like Crowfall, are finally shaping up. And I was sorely tempted; Fractured is definitely on my shortlist.

But in the end, I held my wallet closely. Stuff like TUG? It burns me up. It’s not about the $10 I paid. It’s about the lies. And there’s only one way to avoid them.

I’m still not swearing off the platform; I backed stuff this year, physical stuff, stuff I will actually see completed and in my hands within my lifetime. And I can’t say all crowdfunding is bad since MOP wouldn’t exist without it. But hey, I know our readers, and a lot of you think Kickstarter is pure poison.

Will you Kickstart any MMOs in 2019?

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!

The only Kickstarter I have ever done was to get a short movie put out on DVD. Then I got the DVD, and I was happy.

I am really skeptical of *all* MMOs in development, and doubly so for those on Kickstarter. So many projects never make it off the drawing board, I’m not throwing money down that hole. It would have to be exceptional, have a lot to show already, and then I’d still be nervous.

But hey, I know our readers, and a lot of you think Kickstarter is pure poison.

My $0.02, Kickstarters are not bad, they will free us from the shackles of AAA funding companies.

It’s some of the people who do Kickstarters that are bad. Only takes a few, unfortunately.

Hell no. My kickstarter money is going to CRPGs.

To me, the genre has not evolved in the direction that it should’ve been obvious to go. A lot of Japanese animes has recognized that and went for it, but the games industry and MMORPG devs seem to missed that somehow. Look at Sword Art Online, I’m not talking about plot and storytelling of the series, I’m talking about the world building of the MMO, the set of rules involved in your interaction with that world and its inhabitants. How everything is unknown even skills, materials, boss mechanics and you can discover those by exploration and trial and errors.

I’d like to see a game in the genre that has a heavy investment in the infrastructure of things. Like a ruling party has a law system that it’ll be enforced by NPCs and PCs and deviation from that/getting caught has grievous consequences, including a trial and execution system. I want it to be a perfect balance between PVE content, PVP content, and Sandbox. Something I can immerse myself in, be truly part of that world in whatever form it may take, an adventurer, a farmer, a politician, a spy, a merchant, a beggar, a thief, a cook…

Until then, it is unlikely for me to support anything on Kickstarter.

It would have to be something very different. I’m happy with my Pantheon backing, as well as Crowfall and Ashes. I think the genre needs a good space/cyberpunk MMO. I seriously doubt I’d back another fantasy MMO.

Me have only backed a couple o games..Revival..and Shroud of the Avatar…of the 2 at least Shroud is out..Revival…not so much *le sigh*
I do support PoE just buyin cosmetic stuffs..Grim Dawn The expansions..Would absolutely support another Larian game specially ifn they keep goin wif da quality of game that they have alrd put out. Luckily,me didn’t support Star Citizen..sumpin told me not to..me would like to be alive when a game releases *evil grin*
Don’t see any this year that me would donate me carrots to..ceptin possibly A:IR
but since that game seems to have a “shadow presence” rather than concrete things to show(and concept art doesn’t count) me don’t hold out much hope for that.
just me 2 carrots worth!

Not planning on it.

I keep my eye on potential table top games to KS (doubly so if they’re from creators that have a history of delivering on their product), but I don’t go in for KSing video games as a general rule, and don’t at all for MMOs (mostly cause I’m perfectly content with my current MMO).

I’ve been known buy in to an early access period for a game like Divinity 2, but that’s about as close as I’ll get to actually kickstarting a game.

It all depends on the MMO being kickstarted and WHO is kickstarting it. I am not anti kickstarter, indeed I tend to back about a dozen or so projects a year (not just games) and occasionally you get stung.

Sometimes you’ll get stung because they underestimate how much money they needed, or because of personnel or technical issues, other backers or publishers pull out etc..etc.. and very rarely if you arent cautious and do your checks occasionally they are just scams and your money is gone with the wind.

But as noted if you do your checks you can minimise those risks substantially and it is a good idea not to approach a kickstarter with the view it is a purchase where what is offered is guarunteed..because it isn’t, its an investment in the hope of a finished product, nothing more.

So with that said, as I say if some interesting kickstarters pop up i’ll weigh the pros and cons and do my checks and if they seem like an interesting and relatively safe investment i’ll drop a few bucks and see what happens.

Not after Ashes Of Creation promised a Subscription Based MMORPG with NO Cash Shop & Built a F2P Battle Royale with a Cash Shop.

I chose to wait and see on that one, I’m glad I trusted my instincts. Sad really as the MMO they were promising sounded quite appealing and the visuals are certainly nice.

From my understanding the BR is not the main mode of the game, nor are they abandoning the original design. So i would still give them the benefit of the doubt.

Show me where, in their Kickstarter pitch, that they mention Battle Royale with a Cash Shop as being part of the “Original Design”.

You won’t be able to show me that because it doesn’t exist. It doesn’t exist because they Lied & decided to jump on the latest bandwagon for a fast Cash Grab.

Kickstart any new MMOs? Possibly, but not likely. It will need to be something that really catches my eye as something I’d really want to play and that’s otherwise worth the risk to toss some money at. Upping my pledge to Pantheon is far more likely, however, if that counts.
