A Final Fantasy XIV localization glitch hints at a second new race for Shadowbringers

More yay, but also less.

Everyone knew ahead of time that Final Fantasy XIV patch 4.55 would contain no further story advancements. And it doesn’t… or, more accurately, it doesn’t contain any intentional story advancements. Because a localization glitch has led to a flurry of rumors in what appears to not only provide Viera localization but also hints at another heretofore unannounced race, the Hrothgar. A number of lines referring to player races have been found in older quests which include Hrothgar on the table of potential races for the player character.

For those of you unclear on how this works, the French version of the game (but not others) uses these strings to address player by race in certain dialogues, and a typo in the code has resulted in the full strings of potential options being output at once. Equally worth noting are the fact that both Hrothgar and Viera are listed with both masculine and feminine pronouns, and frequently with gendered adjectives as well (lines stating “la belle Viera” and “le beau Viera,” for example), highly implying both genders in play. It’s unclear at this point whether this is a remnant from earlier in development, a confirmation of a second race, or a red herring… but it will certainly keep player attention during the month-long wait for the final fan festival.
