Torchlight’s alpha patch tomorrow is gonna be off the rails

See what we did there?

Furbish up your Arc clients, folks: Torchlight Frontiers’ alpha is gearing up for a big patch tomorrow, the star of which is surely the newly announced Railmaster class. You’ll be “swinging a big hammer and laying tracks” while cleaning up in melee and wrecking mobs with your trains and summoning ghost cars and we’re here for this.

PWE and Echtra Games have noted they’re boosting character slots in the alpha, so you won’t have to delete your darlings to make a choo-choo class. The patch will add new monsters, buff foci, and fix a bunch of outstanding bugs. Finally, the studios say they think they’ve finally fixed the alpha’s worst overspawn problems.

“It’s been a mutating and multi-limbed beast to tackle, but we’ve made some serious headway in taming the out-of-control spawning that was taking place in areas like Gobtown. You should no longer encounter wave upon wave of champions. There’s still tuning for spawn rates to be done, but the worst of it is over.”

The patch is rolling out tomorrow!

I just hope the high end area spawn problems are fixed. Gobtown has been crazy and can’t get anything done in it (hundreds of monsters spawn on top of each other and keep re-spawning more new ones very fast as you wipe them out, AND on top of it there are shamans that resurrect what you killed, it’s pretty crazy, causes a lot of disconnects too there are so many creatures spawning). I hope they got enough reports on it to know it needs fixing.

This is why they need to let us keep going and not do wipes at least during the rest of testing, people didn’t get far enough along before to these higher areas to give reports about the stuff in them that needed fixing.

You mean the class inspired by GW2 Scrapper?

No. It’s inspired by an NPC from Torchlight 2. You’re literally laying out train tracks and building train cars to go on it. It’s not inspired by anything from Guild Wars 2.

That said the article here that announced this a week or two ago claimed this class as a unique entry into MMOs, where as in 2015 the Scrapper Elite Spec Introduced an Engineer that uses a Hammer, and has Drones; sounds an awful lot like this class that has a Train which is basically a Drone while weiding a Hammer decked out like a an Engineer.

So while Scrapper may have been influenced by this TL2 Character the simple fact remains that technically this class in the Torchlight MMO basically copied a previously existing MMO Class while every one pats them on the back for being innovative.

How dare they! The unmitigated gall! The bare-faced cheek! Someone should write a very strongly-worded letter of complaint to those Torchlight hooligans and give them a jolly good telling-off! My word, well I never, etc etc, ad nauseum…

To be honest if you just want to play, you’re not missing a lot yet. It still has a lot of work to do and is best now for people who actually want to help test. Yes, they also do need people there just playing for server load tests and to run into certain problems and get data off, but there is a great lot more to be added to the game still. It’s a lot earlier than you might think, even though the basic gameplay is there.

That and our characters display our account names rather than the character names, so you’re not even missing out on getting to get names. We do name them and you see that name at character selection, but once in game it only displays your account name for your character and chat. Though I don’t know if that will change or not. In Star Trek Online they display both your character name and account name, I don’t know if that’s going to happen here or it will stay the way it is.

I’m not saying it isn’t fun, it definitely is, but it will be far more fun once it’s further along in development. It’s a bit mindless at the moment, a lot of systems aren’t there that will be there later.

You know what, I applied twice, on different occasions, and never heard anything back. And today I patched up my Arc Launcher while waiting for Neverwinter, clicked through to the website from the ‘more information’ button on the TF bit in their games list, and it let me download and start playing it! I was shocked, tbh. It’s only about 2.75 Gb, and it’s great fun. See if that works for you too.
