This is a rough year to be excited about BlizzCon. It was a rough year a while back, with World of Warcraft in the midst of an expansion that most players seemed to consider awful enough to declare the game in need of humanitarian intervention. It got rougher at the start of the year when a huge wave of layoffs hit the company. And then it got even worse when less than a month out, Blizzard managed to wedge itself into the center of a storm with how it handled a Hearthstone protest regarding Hong Kong. And now… well, we’re going to see how the convention actually goes.
I know very few people who aren’t pretty upset with Blizzard this year; it’s hard feeling that fan energy in the wake of the past several months. While fanboys are still eager to go to bat for the company, not many other people are. And yet I think there are people who are angry with the company but still do want to be excited about this convention. They want to hear big new announcements that are fun and exciting and make these games feel vibrant and energizing. So what about you, dear readers? Don’t answer for everyone else, just for yourself: Are you personally still excited for the BlizzCon reveals coming today and tomorrow? Do you want to be?
