(We’ve updated the end of this post with the big news from the keynote!)

Path of Exile is about to reveal its future. From the future. Because it’s Saturday already in New Zealand, you see, and the game’s inaugural ExileCon is just about to begin at the Aotea Centre in Auckland. We’re expecting full details on the 3.9.0 expansion that’s launching in December, plus the 4.0.0 “mega-expansion” coming late next year. Do note that every panel from the show will be streamed for free, so you’re not missing out on the info at least by watching from home! MOP’s MJ Guthrie is live at the con right now courtesy of GGG, and she’ll be livetweeting some of the highlights, so make sure you’re following our Twitter!

Summary
Grinding Gear just officially announced Path of Exile 2! Don’t panic because you’re not losing anything.

“Path of Exile 2 is a new seven-act storyline that is available alongside the original Path of Exile 1 campaign. Both the old and new storyline lead to the same shared Atlas endgame. Path of Exile 2 retains all expansion content that has been created over the last six years and introduces a new skill system, ascendancy classes, engine improvements and more.”

The devs also announced POE Mobile as well as the next challenge league, Metamorph.

More when MJ is back at a desk!

Update 8:15 PM EST

Blizzard: We’re going to be dark. Dark, dark, darkity dark.

GGG (chugging what is left of his beer): Have a trailer where all your characters save one* are hanged until dead.

*And who is it that escapes? The witch. Clearly this decision was made with MJ in mind.

I found PoE to be rather boring and overly complicated. It’s good to see that poe 2 is continuing that feel….

The one thing that made marvel heroes one of the more enjoyable arpgs I’ve played was the movement abilities. Now that d4 has mounts I guess I don’t really see what poe is doing to compete with this. Dungeon crawling is one thing but they don’t look like they’re trying to advance the genre at all here. To be fair I stopped watching the gameplay video after 3 min because it just looks like poe1 to me.

Misleading title. It’s an expansion for Path of Exile. Not a full-blown sequel game.

Complain to GGG as they called it POE 2 in all their promotional stuff and it’s not something MOP just slapped on for shits and giggles

It is the 4.0 expansion and for some reason GGG decided to call it POE 2, maybe due to it having 2 campaign’s or something. It is a little confusing I will admit if you are not following the game closely.

It’s all in the delivery and how you frame it to your audience. GGG nailed it and Blizzard shot themselves in both feet.

With the mobile thing for example compare and contrast.

Blizz spent several weeks hyping big Diablo news prior to their mobile announcement. Every one was expecting D4 to be announced and all Blizz had was a mobile game. The core Diablo audience had to wait another year for the thing they really wanted.

GGG kept their hype mostly in check till the event and they first gave their core audience the big announcement of POE 2, complete with trailers and demos. Then said hey we also have a cool addition of a mobile version, give it a try and let us know what you think.

Not sure why anyone was expecting it, they basically said there will be no D4 announcement at Blizzcon (2018) a little more than 2 weeks before Blizzcon but that there were other Diablo projects in the works.

It’s honestly so easy though. You remember why you wanted to develop video games in the first place and you make that and you talk about that and the money comes naturally.

Sort of but not really.

GGG has enjoyed success because a number of factors beyond their obvious passion for their product. From predatory lockbox mechanics to selling out a large portion of their business to China’s TenCent to quite honestly an utter lack of competition in the market of their single game. This isn’t to disparage GGG but rather to say that there’s other factors than just sticking to some principles and the money will flow. There are numerous examples of games that stuck to their design principles and were entirely abandoned.

The internet has forgotten about China unless it is Blizzard.

Nope we haven’t but GGG are not censoring anyone which is what the issue was that lit the fire in the first place with regard to Blizzard.

Though going by your comments here and elsewhere you seem to have morphed it into other things too beyond that.

I’ll be happy to play D4. As long as I can play a character who looks like winnie the pooh and who can organ harvest his opponents.

Im 100% certain that if the ONLY poe thing they announced was their mobile game, it would have been met with the same level upset attitude that blizzard experienced.

Reader
Bannex

Pretty sure the most recent blizzcon announced 2 sequels and 1 expansion. People still acted like blizzard peed in their fruit loops.

Furthermore, I recall people saying blizzard is trying to be like POE but it looks like it’s the other way around lol

Hey now, POE is revolutionizing the concept of a sequel.

Reader
Darkthunder

By calling it a sequel, while still requiring the original game. I may be oldschool, but “in my day” we used to call those things: expansions.

As sad as it is, this is an “original” concept. They didn’t ship the IP over to NetMarble to reskin CashShopApp392 with PoE textures and graphics. That’s just how sad the state of mobile gaming is along with all these other slum lords who own all the mobile real estate in the associated platforms’ Stores. If someone like GGG wants to come in with their own team and disrupt the mobile gaming monetization status-quo, then by all means.

See now, this is what a shop that knows what they’re about does during the prime years of a hit game.

They have a gameplay video for poe2, looks pretty good. I like the changes that they will do. Invariably the comparison to D4 will happen. Is it wrong that I’m looking forward to both? I’m just happy there are some ARPGs coming up. But both seem to be a bit far out though. I imagine early 2021 at the earliest.

Yea. Watching the gameplay vid, every other thought was wow, D4 has really got it’s work cut out for it because this looks awesome.

And the new skill gem system. Can we have that now, please?

Finally, Siege Ballista getting some love. My favorite underpowered skill. I always use it, sad when I finally have to retire it when I reach the Library and can get all my real skill/support gems.

> Grinding Gear announces Path of Exile 2

It seems they gave up on the idea to implement new character models into the existing game. edit: and these new models (and animations) are pretty good judging by the video.

Reader
Reht

Probably a smart idea in the long run. The graphics look sooooo much better, now i am actually excited about the future of PoE.

Reader
Arktouros

I guess Jeff Kaplan was onto something when he said Overwatch 2 model being the future of sequels…

…oh and that shade on Path of Exile mobile was just delicious.
