A new scenario is in development for Final Fantasy XI

In 2015, Final Fantasy XI waved farewell to major updates with the release of Rhapsodies of Vana’diel, a sweeping story encompassing all the expansion stories as the final new scenario for the game. Except it turns out that was a dirty lie because it appears that the big new announcement that was originally going to coincide with the fan gathering was revealed on the latest Japanese livestream as a new scenario currently in development.

So that has completely put an end to the fiction that the game is in any sort of maintenance mode, hasn’t it?

The two points to caution are that “scenario” could mean a variety of things, from “new story content in existing zones” to something more elaborate; at this point, the details aren’t available just yet. No doubt more details will be clear when this is translated into English and leading up to further news. But regardless… five years after the book seemed to be closed, it looks like there are a few more pages left to add.

*smiles widely* That’s one good lie, is it?

Still blows my mind that they consider THIS “maintenance mode”.

Off the top of my head, there are at least a dozen “live” and not “maintenance mode” MMO’s that see less support and updates like this.

I’ve given up hope on B2P, now I’m just waiting for Nexon to finish the mobile version and see how that shapes up.

FFXI’s maintenance mode is the same as most AAA’s nornal update cycle. It funny and sad at the same time…

Is their any way to try the game? It’s $40 + a sub.

Yes there is.

Also I believe the game (which includes a free 30 days and all expansions) is $29.99

Keep checking the square enix store, they often sell the base game digitally for like 3 dollars in their sales.

Update the game’s visuals to be on par with 14’s without changing any of the gameplay and stories and continue the game until the apocalypse, you cowards!

On a serious note I might have to go back for a couple months just to feel something again. 😔

At the very least they could HD-ify it. Though I guess the question is how profitable would it be for them to do that.

I remember there used to be some unofficial things players could do client-side to up the game’s resolution. Has that already been integrated into the official version after they dropped console support? If not, thats some low hanging fruit they could implement.

This comment reminded me that a fan had been remaking areas in UE4 and now I’m trapped in their playlist.

I think if they did it right and kept the heart and soul of the game that so many of us fell in love with all those years ago it would definitely find a big enough audience to at least keep it afloat, if they combined the 14 and 11 sub (like another commenter mentioned) it could maybe do even better than just staying afloat.
But alas, it will most likely never happen (the remake or remaster that is), and now SE has got two darn subs from me yet again lol.

The game refuses to die even when the genre compared to its boom period certainly has. I just wish they future proofed it a little. Maybe have it on consoles since it did technically start as a PS2 game. I still drop in now and then but i have to choose it or XIV and XIV is just going to win nowadays but if they did some sort of joined up subscription i would definitely play XI a lot more. Its slow nature trying to emulate the ATB system in real time always made it feel in a strange way like the animal crossing experience i like but in MMOS. You take your time, do what you want and its a slow paced relaxing experience when you aren’t doing Ruby Weapon extreme and screaming at each other.
