Phantasy Star Online 2 provides closed beta players with rewards for participation

Might as well jump.

Technically speaking, Phantasy Star Online 2 is currently still in beta testing, but since it’s an open beta test it’s close enough to “launch” for all intents and purposes. However, it’s noteworthy because the game did also have a closed beta, and there were rewards promised for players who took on urgent missions within that closed beta. And good news for the participants: those rewards are being distributed as of today.

Players will gain greater rewards for each Urgent Mission completed up to 4, with all reward packages including a boost item and the cosmetic rewards ranging from specialized halos around your character to a skin to turn your personal mag into a little floating Dreamcast. (The first Phantasy Star Online was on the Dreamcast, you see.) If you didn’t already take care of this it is too late to jump in now, of course, but you can still enjoy the fruits of your labors from the closed beta.

The game is massively neutered to be honest. Half the stuff you can get on the JP servers will ever see the light of day in the west, for various reasons. Either too risque and mature, or too old and licensing issues. Stupid kids ruining it with their fuckery as well. It’s a rated M game, but SEGA is treating it like a rated T or E game. Censoring everywhere, while the characters use the same language in cutscenes. It’s just a butchered mess. Find a translated install, and play on the JP servers. You will get your money’s worth there at least.

The obligatory, “If it’s not for PC, it isn’t really a beta.” /bleh

The longer the PC delay the more interest will fade. It’s really pissing off the PC community. Who will probably just stay on the JP servers anyways.

It looks like you can’t even use the search function on their forums without an Xbox One account, though it does seem pretty sparse there anyway (clicking into News & Announcements, there are a few things from February and nothing else).

Is there any info anywhere on when the Windows version is getting released at all, anything other than “soon”?

I suppose that if that was easily accessible information we’d have heard about it already, I just am curious if maybe some commenter has heard or seen something somewhere that most of us are missing :D

Hopefully before the end of summer. There’s really no reason for them to delay it so long for PC other than exclusivity $$$ and putting it on Microsoft’s platform so Windows 10 users and Xbox One users can play together.

It has nothing to do with exclusivity money. An 8 year old MMO is not a system seller. Microsoft puts their first party games on PC day and date with the Xbox releases now too. They don’t care where you buy their games. This is completely a failure on the devs part.
