Blizzard alters Warcraft III: Reforged’s matchmaking system while players are waiting on basic features

And not even the features that were selling points but later quietly dropped

Slide whistle noises dot emm pee three.

You know that old joke about how you could get the Model T Ford in any color you wanted as long as it was black? Well, Warcraft III: Reforged continues its long trend of being a variant on that joke because the latest update will give you everything you want as long as it’s behind-the-scenes matchmaking improvements that don’t actually require a patch download. For players who are concerned about their status in ranked matches, this is good news!

For players who were interested in things like ranked ladders, custom campaigns, profiles, clans, or actual fixes for recurring connection issues, this is essentially confirmation that the game remains a notable downgrade from its prior version. The game’s last actual patch has still not added these features, which means that it remains an open question of when the game will reach the standard of features that were present in the classic version of the game before this remake launched. But hey, new matchmaking.

For a long time I’d been hoping they would do a remake of Diablo II, which I consider far and away the best of the series. At this point, I’m assuming they won’t bother considering what happened with W3. Probably just as well.

If they did a remake of Diablo 2 it would have to pretty much be a completely new game from the sounds of it. It’s not like Starcraft where they can just polish up the visuals or Warcraft 3 where they can butcher the client and slap fancier models into the game.

If there was any doubt left that OG Blizzard is gone, this abortion of a Warcraft III “upgrade” wiped it away …
