Wait, didn’t jamming a shard of one of the Prime Evils of Hell into yourself get proven to be a bad thing? Regardless, the Nephalem of Diablo III will get to jam Soul Shards based on the Lords of Hell into their items in the next season, which is now in PTR testing. Lore be damned.

This new Soul Shard system will introduce seven of these unique items: three Prime Evil Soul Shards that can be slotted into helmets (I understood that reference dot gif), and four Lesser Evil Soul Shards that can be slotted into weapons, with only one of each type of Shard able to be equipped by players. Each of these items grant demonic powers based on the game’s Seven Lords of Hell, and can be further buffed through the use of Hellforge Ember. Unfortunately, this system is another case of borrowed power; once the season ends, Soul Shards will not transfer to non-seasonal characters.

The new season also introduces changes to a number of class-specific items as well as a variety of bug fixes. It all will be available for testing this coming Thursday, November 4th, for a two week-long public testing period. So go ahead, cram that demonic shard into your helmet. What’s the worst that could happen?

Activision-Blizzard is considered a controversial company in the MMO and gaming space owing to a long string of scandals over the last few years, including the Blitzchung boycott, mass layoffs, labor disputes, and executive pay fiasco. In the summer of 2021, the company was sued by the state of California for fostering a work environment riddled with sexual harassment and discrimination, the disastrous corporate response to which has further compounded Blizzard’s ongoing pipeline issues and the widespread perception that its online games are in decline. As of fall 2021, multiple state and federal agencies are currently investigating the company.
