A few podcasts ago, MOP’s Justin said something in passing that struck me so hard I wrote it down to talk about further. In discussing his recent return to RIFT, he said that most people think of RIFT as a “generic MMO.”
I don’t even think I objected in the recording; I agree that a lot of people would probably consider RIFT generic. I’m just not sure it’s fair. There’s a lot of uniqueness to RIFT, particularly its character development system. Is it the lack of a borrowed IP, maybe? The well-roundedness of its themepark systems? What exactly makes it “generic” compared to other MMOs of its type, and how are we judging it?
You tell me: What’s the most “generic” MMORPG, and why?
