The other day, I was reminded by a fellow Lord of the Rings Online player of something that I had completely forgotten: That the game originally featured a fog of war on its maps, slowly filling out as you’d explore the landscape. I since had become so accustomed to seeing the full map upon entering a new zone that my mind figured it’d always been like that.
However, some games, such as Guild Wars 2, still retain the fog of war as a key part of their “mapping.” But it does seem like a feature that’s faded into disuse in most modern titles.
How do you feel about the fog of war with MMO maps? Does it encourage exploration or create navigation frustration? Is it something we should see more of in the future or less?
